5 Scariest Monsters in ‘Star Wars’

Calling all the monsters! Calling all the monsters!

Growing up, monsters are some of the main staples of the Star Wars universe. Sometimes, it is fun to be scared not by a Sith Lord or a Death Star, but by a large lumbering creature that occupies the galaxy far, far away. These are terrifying creatures that would scare the living daylights out of anyone who would live in this place. Which creatures are the worst of the worst, and the scariest of the scariest? Who are the top five scariest monsters in the galaxy far, far away?

Rancor

What can be more scary than a monster that tries to take on Luke Skywalker? Well that is exactly what the rancor is. First appearing in Return of the Jedi, the rancor is one of the iconic monsters of the galaxy far, far away. Appearing in several other media like Force Unleashed videogame as well as the recent Bad Batch series, they are famous for being giant monsters of destruction and fear. This resident of Jabba’s palace is truly a classic staple of the galaxy far, far away.

Acklay

Things with many legs are always scary and the acklays are very horrifying. Their greatest appearance is in Attack of the Clones when they battle our heroes in the arena of Geonosis. In many ways, they are a staple of prequel era monsters. While their appearance is few and far between, the acklays are quite memorable for attacking our heroes in the climatic scene as they try to make their escape from a hostile world that is out to kill them.

Krayt Dragon

A creature of legend, we first encounter the krayt dragon when C-3PO walks past its bones in the desert of Tatooine, and when Obi-Wan Kenobi imitates its call to scare off the Tusken raiders. The creature itself appears in the flesh in various Star Wars Legends properties like The Old Republic MMORPG, and in the Star Wars: Bounty Hunter videogame (starring Jango Fett). However, we get our first real on screen appearance of the krayt dragon in the Mandalorian episode “The Marshal,” when the massive creature of Tatooine harrasses a Tusken raider village. It is amazing and horrifying to see such a terrifying beast of Star Wars.

Wampa

The abominable snowman is one of the most ancient creatures in cryptid history. Of course Star Wars would have one in its arsenal of monsters. The famous snow beast of Hoth only appears for a brief second in Empire Strikes Back, with only a bit more screen time in the Special Edition. The wampa is remembered for attacking Luke Skywalker while he is on patrol on the ice planet. It would then have its arm chopped off by Luke later on in the scene from the extended edition. It made an impression with kids who were watching Empire Strikes Back for the first time in the 1980s, and still makes an impression with Star Wars fans today.

Krykna

Spiders are scary, and so are spiders in Star Wars.

Once they were considered just concept art for creatures that would appear on Dagobah. The krykna would later appear in Star Wars Rebels in the caves near a Rebel base. Their now big claim to fame was of course in the second episode of Season 2 of The Mandalorian, “The Passenger.” Its appearance is both horrifying and sends chills to both our characters and the audience.

Star Wars has a lot of monsters in it. Many have scared the various audiences, both kids and adults alike, when watching the tales of the galaxy far, far away. Sometimes, they make good boss battles in videogames. Either way, like most of the Star Was universe, these creatures spark our imagination and stay with us for most of our lives.
