Since 2020 and the start of the pandemic, there has been a surge of new content available for viewing on YouTube, both from new creators and from established creators who have decided to diversify their content. One such established YouTuber is Englishman Simon Whistler.

Simon travels the world and makes money working online. His field is “edutainment,” or the creation of entertaining educational materials. He is or was the host of the following channels:

TopTenz

The TopTenz channel is dedicated to making- what else?- top ten lists. It makes videos on topics ranging from people and history to technology, comedy, and more. Originally started as a website in 2008, the first YouTube video was posted on April 17th, 2010; Whistler became the first dedicated host in February 15th, 2014. The channel was hacked by a bitcoin scammer in April 2020, and the channel was briefly suspended before being restored to Whistler.

Today I Found Out is Whistler’s 2nd channel; it launched in 2011. The channel goes in-depth on specific topics. This channel is more generalized than specific in terms of topics. The first video was entitled “The Origins and Meanings of 9 Pirate Words and Expressions.”

Formerly hosted by Whistler, VisualPolitikEN makes videos about world politics and economic relations. The channel launched in 2017, and currently has over 670 videos.

Biographics

Created by Whistler in 2017, Biographics is a channel that makes videos exploring the life and impact of various historical and cultural figures.

Subjects covered range from actual figures like Genghis Khan or Vladimir Putin to fictional figures like Sherlock Holmes; the channel also covers things like viruses and social events like pandemics.  The channel’s first video was about Vladimir Putin; it currently has over 500 videos.

 

Geographics

Launched alongside Whistler’s channel Biographics, Geographics is a channel featuring in-depth explorations of geography-related topics. These topics range from terrestrial topics like famous cities and landmarks to out-of-this-world topics like planets and large-scale geographic events. The channel was initially created in 2017 but did not post until 2019. It currently hosts over 144 videos.

 

Highlight History

Launched in September 2018 and currently hosting over 95 videos, this channel features notable historical events or people. The videos are uploaded in a time-progression format, meaning that the videos are posted on the day their subject occurred. This interesting concept means topics are very planned, and that the uploading tends to be sporadic.

 

Brain Blaze

Started by Whistler in 2019, Brain Blaze- originally known as Business Blaze- covers a wide variety of topics by exploring things like epic fails and crazy facts.

Whistler reads the scripts- usually written by Danny Salter- and adds his own commentary and reactions. Compared to his other channels, Whistler’s style on Brain Blaze is a lot more relaxed and personality-driven. The channel currently hosts over 250 videos.

 

Megaprojects

Launched in late March 2020, Megaprojects covers mankind’s greatest achievements, structures, and projects. Topics covered range from things like the Great Chinese Firewall to the Antikythera Mechanism; the channel’s first video was about the International Space Station, and its most popular video covers the A-12 Archangel. The channel currently has over 195 videos.

 

Sideprojects

Created in August 2020, Sideprojects is Whistler’s 9th channel, and is an offshoot of the Megaprojects channel. The channel covers smaller-scale projects like specific models of tanks or planes; it is also a repository for Whistler’s videos that don’t quite fit into any of his other channels. The channel currently features over 150 videos.

 

The Casual Criminalist

Created in 2020 and becoming active in 2021, this channel focuses on true-crime content; it also comes in a podcast format. Whistler presents the channel in a more “casual” style, a focuses more on accurate retelling. Topics range from heists to serial killers. The channel currently features over 50 videos; its most popular video is about child serial killer Mary Bell.

Started in October 2020, this channel explores whatever interesting topics Whistler might come up with. Not really falling into any particular niche, this channel was eventually overshadowed by Whistler’s other, newer channels. It is currently inactive.

 

Decoding the Unknown

Launched in August 2021, this is one of Whistler’s long-form channels, and is a sister channel to The Casual Criminalist. The channel explores many mysteries, covering topics like unexplained disappearances, internet mysteries, and cryptids. The channel is presented in a casual style. Its first video was about the Dyatlov Pass incident, and its most popular video covers the internet mystery of Cicada 3301.

 

Into the Shadows

Started in August 2021, this is an educational channel focusing on “the darker side of everything.” Topics range from natural disasters, drug addiction and human tragedy. The channel’s first video covers the Ratlines- the ways the Nazis escaped Europe- and the most-viewed video covers cobalt bombs. The channel is notable for Whistler’s ending of simply walking off-screen without any further epilogue.

 

Warographics

Starting in October 2021, this channel covers both modern and historical conflicts. The channel forms a historical trio with the Biographics and Geographics channels. It features over 20 videos. Its first and still most-viewed video covers the Franco-Prussian War.

 

The Science of Science Fiction

Launched in June 2022, this is Whistler’s newest channel; it covers the real scientific concepts behind popular science fiction media. It discusses specific topics and more generic sci-fi tropes, assessing their viability against actual science. The channel currently has over 25 videos; its first video covers the possibility of creating a dinosaur a la Jurassic Park. This is also the channel’s most-viewed video.

 

In addition to his work on YouTube, Whistler is also an active podcast host and entrepreneur. He currently lives and works in Prague, Czechia.
