The Best Substories In 'Like A Dragon'
The Yakuza games are known for a lot of different things. Their stories are among the best and have some great karaoke songs and minigames, but one of the best aspects of the games is the substories. Substories are just side missions that the player can choose to do during their journey. Like A Dragon is no different. Since Ichiban won’t hesitate to help someone, it's no wonder that he gets roped into some pretty crazy substories. From fighting men in diapers to helping a homeless man build a shelf, let's take a look at some of the best substories in Like A Dragon.
5.) Baby Don’t Cry
The Gondawara family is a recurring Yakuza family throughout the series and is known for their quirks. One substory involves Ichiban finding milk for a new father who needs to bring it home to his wife and newborn baby. Ichiban goes into a building nearby, where he is greeted by an interesting sight. The patriarch of the Gondawara family, and some of his men, are on the floor, in diapers being treated like babies. Ichiban is a bit taken aback, but since he disrupted them, a fight ensues. The substory is pretty early in the game, it's a good way to get money, as it gives the player 200,000 yen. After the fight, Ichiban successfully gets the milk and brings it back to the father, who runs home to give it to his wife and newborn baby. This mission truly shows the wackier side of the Yakuza games.

4.) The Miracle of Spice
Throughout the game, Ichiban runs into a few people that could use a boost. He also stumbles across an old man selling kimchi with a kick to it. Anyone who eats it runs away screaming, due to how spicy it is. The old man gifts some to Ichiban, and he uses it to help the various people he stumbles across. An older lady needs help to cross the street, and one bite of this kimchi helps her do this. Another is a girl who is scared to tell someone how she feels, and with a bite of the kimchi, she overcomes her fear and can share her feelings with the boy. It’s such a wacky, yet fun mission, and seeing these people react so strongly to the spicy kimchi is hilarious.
3.) Fauxno Michio
Ono Michio, the pride of Ono Michi, has become a nationwide sensation ever since Kiryu’s performance of the icon in Yakuza 6. With such an iconic character, everyone is now looking to profit off of Ono Michio, which has spawned a series of knockoffs plaguing Chinatown. Ichiban decides to help the creator of Ono Michio round up the fakes so they can’t be sold anymore. At one point, Ichiban must don the iconic mascot costume to beat up and stop the imposter once and for all. The reward? An Ono Michio Poundmates summon.
2.) Persimmon Premonition
Theres a lone persimmon on a tree waiting to fall, but it cannot until a girl has her surgery. Ichiban comes across a father and a daughter out for a walk in the park behind Survive bar. He learns that the girl is sick, and waiting for surgery. The only thing keeping her going is the lone persimmon on the tree. She knows if it falls her surgery won’t go well, so Ichiban does everything he can to make sure it doesn’t. Various people hit the tree for different reasons, and Ichiban stops them each time. The story has a happy ending, as the persimmon never fell off the tree. The girl's surgery was also a success and gave her a new lease on life.
1.) The Crawfish Caper
This substory introduces one of the best, and weirdest characters to the game. Ichiban is strolling across a bridge when he comes across a crawfish. So naturally, he tosses it back into the river where it belongs. It turns out, that crawfish, named Nancy, was an old man's beloved pet. So Ichiban scours the nearby riverside to find Nancy and return him to the owner. The reunion isn’t all smiles, as the man is planning to fry up and eat Nancy the entire time. Ichiban, who grew attached to the creature during his search, bargains with the man to spare Nancy’s life and hand him over. Nancy eventually becomes a member of the local Poundmates service, and even makes a return in the sequel, Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth.
There are a ton of substories in Like A Dragon, but these are some of the most memorable ones. The substories are fun, and add some more content to the game. They also help showcase Ichiban’s character as a hero, who is truly willing to help anyone. Sometimes the substories are the most emotional parts of these games and are always worth checking out.
