Ranking The Squadmates In The Mass Effect Series-Part 1

Mass Effect

The Mass Effect series is one of the most beloved game series ever. In three games, it tells the story of Commander Shepard saving the world from the Collectors. It’s a big open world with a wide range of characters. Some of these characters you recruit to help you on your mission because saving Earth requires more than one person. The characters you recruit all have different abilities and come from diverse backgrounds. Some, of course, are fan favorites and are always used in playthroughs, and others stay back on the Normandy for every mission. There are a lot of squadmates in the Mass Effect series, and some, of course, are better than others. These ones, well, let’s say you can leave them behind on the Normandy for the most part.

20. Jacob Taylor

If there is one human in the Mass Effect series that gets the most hate, it’s Jacob Taylor. Jacob is a mandatory squadmate, and like Miranda, he works for Cerberus. He’s not the best in combat, as he doesn’t specialize in one thing. His personality is average, and if you decide to romance him, he even cheats on you and has no remorse.

19. Kaiden Alenko

Another character that doesn’t get much love in the fandom. If you choose for Ashley to die at the end of the first game, then Kaiden will instead be on your squad in the third game. He, like Ashley, was part of the Alliance and had military training. His skills aren’t great, so leaving him back on the Normandy isn’t a loss.

18. Ashley Williams

A character who is widely hated in the Mass Effect fandom. Her past comments about alien species weren’t ideal. If Shepard decides to have her live at the end of the first game, then they will have her as a squadmate. She’s a human and part of the Alliance. She has military training and eventually moves up in the ranks. Her skills aren’t great, so it’s not a big loss if you leave her behind on the Normandy.

17. Morinth

Depending on the outcome of Samara’s loyalty mission, you have the option to recruit Morinth. Morinth is Samara’s daughter and is nothing like her mother. She murders people for fun and even threatens to murder Shepard a few times. Stat-wise, she and her mother are the same, except Samara has much more experience with her biotics and is the better of the two characters.

16. EDI

EDI

EDI is an AI on the Normandy SR-2 in the second game. In the third game, she takes control of a robot body and becomes a companion. She’s not terrible in battle and can even spawn a decoy and reinforce Shepard’s armor. While she may not be important in battle, she’s essential in Shepard’s story.

15. Miranda Lawson

Miranda is one of the most surprising characters in Mass Effect 2. She is earnest with her job at Cerberus and may not be the most trustworthy. However, as the game progresses, Miranda shows a softer side and even recruits Shepard to help find her sister. Her personality may not always be the best, but her motives definitely are.

14. Kasumi Goto

Kasumi was originally only available through DLC. However, with the Mass Effect Legendary Edition, everyone is able to get Kasumi. She’s very friendly and eccentric and an excellent thief. Kasumi is a great character with a fascinating backstory, but we don’t get enough of her in the game.

13. James Vega

James has a disadvantage, as he only appears in the last game. He is voiced by Freddie Prinze Jr, who does a beautiful job at portraying a strong, yet sometimes ditzy character. James is a likable guy and has fun with Shepard. It isn’t until the Citadel DLC that you get to learn more about who he is.

12. Zaeed Massani

Another character was originally only available in DLC. He is a mercenary and bounty hunter who loves guns and explosives. You may have to dig to learn more about this grumpy old man, but when you do, you find he has a pretty rich and complex story. He’s also pretty good in battle and is equipped with explosives that can take down even the toughest collectors.

11. Javik

Javik

Javik is definitely different from your average companion. He’s the oldest of the bunch at 50,000 years and is an ancient Prothean. He, like Kasumi and Zaeed, was initially available only in DLC. Javik has to get used to an entirely new galaxy, so it makes sense he’s not the nicest sometimes. He’s excellent in combat, with his impressive biotic powers, and is essential for missions.

There are a lot of squadmates in the Mass Effect series. While these may not be the characters Shepard brings on their missions, they’re still crucial to their story and the overall battle of fighting the collectors. And hey, their loyalty missions give you another reason to dive deeper into the vast universe of Mass Effect.

Stayed tuned for part 2 of the ranking!
