Moving Beyond Vampires: 5 Monsters Who Deserve A Greater Screen Presence

Everyone knows of Dracula, the mummy, and Frankenstein’s Monster because their stories have been told time and time again. Movie monsters have been around since roughly 1915, but in modern cinema, we typically only see vampires, werewolves, and zombies.  With so many monsters to choose from, it’s disappointing how little Hollywood branches out. These classic creatures span fanbases and even offer an opportunity to explore cultures from around the world. Here are five movie monsters that deserve more attention!

5. The Thing/The Blob

These creatures share many similarities but are at the same time completely different. The Blob was created in 1958 for a film of the same name while The Thing was created in 1982 by John Carpenter. The Thing was an alien being that could take on the form of other creatures, and The Blob was an alien being that could dissolve anything it sucked up. Both scarred audiences at the time of the films' releases and had little motivation given for their motives let alone their existence.  While I’m not suggesting remakes of the classics, it would be nice to see more mysterious alien beings find their way into modern cinema without the need for actual aliens.

While this “monster” was technically created on the long-forgotten site Creepy Pasta, most cultures have a version of this being hidden in their lore. It would be interesting to see filmmakers pull inspiration from lore around the world to explore the complexities of this being. There are countless opportunities with this character, and I would love to see just how scary it could be. It would make for some great horror or psychological thriller content!

3. The Rancor

One of the most recognizable creatures from the Star Wars galaxy, this creature has not gotten nearly enough screen time. Little is known about the rancor, so it has almost a blank slate for filmmakers to play with. The Rancor was first introduced to audiences in 1983’s Episode VI: Return of The Jedi as Jabba’s creature that devoured those that upset him. It wasn’t until The Book of Boba Fett’s release in 2021 that we got some backstory for the rancor. With LucasFilms constantly looking for ideas for new shows and movies, it only makes sense that this creature gets its time in the spotlight.

2. The Bride Of Frankenstein

Frankenstein’s Monster has gotten plenty of screen time since his debut in 1931, but the same cannot be said for his “bride”. She appears in the last five minutes of the 1935 film Bride of Frankenstein and that five minutes is terror for her but does very little for the audience. It is time that the monster step aside and let the bride have her moment to shine. We have never seen this character as anything but a side story for the monster, so I would like to see someone create a film or series that focuses 100% on her character.

1. Creature From The Black Lagoon/ Swamp Thing

This monster has so much potential! It could either be pulled from the 1954 Creature from The Black Lagoon since that film ends with audiences not knowing if the creature was killed or not or from the DC comics where he is a menacing-looking superhero. With James Gunn taking over at DC, both creatures could make an appearance, and it would make sense for Gunn to pull from underused superheroes like Swamp Thing. Gunn also said during an Instagram Q & A with fans that he originally wanted to do a Creature from the Black Lagoon remake, but Universal turned him down. I would honestly be excited for either creature to find its way back to the screen since they are criminally underused and would be a breath of fresh air for audiences.
