Essential 'The Clone Wars' And 'Rebels' Episodes To Watch Before 'The Mandalorian' Season 3
The trailers that have been released for Season 3 of The Mandalorian showed Din and Grogu reuniting after the events of The Book of Boba Fett, and venturing to the planet of Mandalore. We also saw Bo Katan on the throne of Mandalore, and it seemed she may be the antagonist this season as she tried to get the Darksaber from Din. Both Mandalore and the Darksaber were introduced and explored in the animated series The Clone Wars and Rebels.
These are the essential episodes of The Clone Wars and Rebels to watch before Season 3 of The Mandalorian premieres.
The Mandalore Plot: The Clone Wars Season 2, Episodes 12- 14
This arc introduced the planet of Mandalore, Duchess Satine Kryze, the leader of Mandalore and sister to Bo-Katan Kryze. The Darksaber also made its first appearance in this arc. Fans also met the villain of the story, the Death Watch, from which Din Djarin’s group is descended.
Obi-Wan Kenobi was tasked with protecting the Duchess from an assassination attempt as she tried to keep the planet neutral in the Clone Wars despite its militaristic past.'

This story arc marked the end of Duchess Satine’s reign when she was murdered by Darth Maul, who now possesses the Darksaber, making him the rightful ruler of Mandalore. This essentially doomed the planet and sent it into decades of violence.
The Siege of Mandalore: The Clone Wars Season 7, Episodes 9- 12
These episodes are set at the same time as the events of Star Wars: Episode III- Revenge Of The Sith, giving fans insight into the Mandalorian Civil War happening in a different part of the galaxy. The Republic’s last attack was led by Ahsoka Tano and Bo-Katan. Darth Maul’s true plans were also revealed. After the heroes’ victory, there was not much time to celebrate, as the Republic had officially fallen, and the Empire rose in its place.
Trials Of Mandalore And Legacy Of Mandalore: Star Wars: Rebels Season 3, Episodes 15- 16
Maul abandoned the Darksaber after his plans were discovered during “The Siege Of Mandalore.” It was eventually picked up by Sabine Wren. This two-part story depicted Sabine as she learned what it meant to wield the Darksaber, and was forced to confront the past she had tried so hard to forget.
The return of the Darksaber finally brought back hope to the Mandalorians and enabled them to stand up against Gar Saxon, leader of the Imperial Super Commandos. However, by the end of the arc, Mandalore remained without a leader.
Heroes Of Mandalore: Star Wars Rebels Season 4, Episodes 1- 2
These episodes continued the story of the Rebel uprising on Mandalore. Bo-Katan returned with the Darksaber, given to her by Sabine. However, she was still not recognized as the true leader of Mandalore as she must win the Darksaber through combat.
Mandalore had been through a lot since its first introduction to Star Wars lore. There was hope for the planet under the rule of Duchess Satine. After her death, the planet fell into disarray and had not recovered. The planet had definitely seen better days. The story continues as Din Djarin and Grogu venture there in the eponymous Mandalorian’s quest for redemption. Bo-Katan must win the Darksaber from Din in combat in order to be recognized as the true leader of Mandalore and start the rebuilding process.
Their paths will cross in The Mandalorian Season 3, premiering March 1, 2003 on Disney+.
