Masters and apprentices are an essential part of Star Wars. We see this in the Jedi order when an older Jedi trains a padawan, with the Sith and their rule of two. This idea has always been present in Star Wars media and goes back to the original trilogy. There’s even a new Disney+ special titled Master and Apprentice, showing the relationship between Anakin and Ahsoka. With how much Star Wars has expanded over the years, we have been introduced to many different pairings, so let's look at the best ones we have seen throughout all the various Star Wars content.

10. Luminara Unduli/Barriss Offee

This pairing is a bit different from the others on this list. Luminara and Barriss did not have a deep relationship, as they were more strictly business when it came to being master and apprentice. Both had mutual respect, but not the sibling-type relationship so many other pairings had. It also didn’t help when Barriss was tempted by the dark side, caused an explosion in the Jedi temple, and framed her friend Ahsoka Tano for it.

9. Darth Sidious/Count Dooku

Emporer Palpatine was a master manipulator. He used whoever he could, in order to get what he wanted, which tended to be more power. This was the case with Count Dooku. The two of them were behind The Clone Wars, which caused the deaths of thousands across the galaxy. Sidious however, was using Dooku the entire time, as Dooku believed that he had a place in the Empire to come.

8. Baylan Skoll/Shin Hati

This is one of the newest master and apprentice pairings that we have seen. Baylan Skoll and Shin Hati were first introduced in Ahsoka. They are Mercenaries, but neither Jedi nor Sith and wield orange lightsabers. Baylan is very experienced, and we have learned recently that he was raised with the Jedi and saw the Temple burn. He misses some of the Jedi ways, but not all of them. He is teaching Shin his ways, even if she is unsure about a lot of his teachings.

7. Kanan Jarrus/Ezra Bridger

Ezra and Kanan

Ezra is another unconventional Jedi, similar to Luke, he was trained when the Jedi were supposed to be in hiding and was older than your average Padawan. During the missions the Ghost crew would embark on, Kanan would take the time to train Ezra. A few times, Ezra almost fell to the dark side, with the help of Maul, but always came back to the light, with the help of Kanan’s teachings. Once Kanan died, however, it changed Ezra a bit. He decided to sacrifice himself during their final mission, to save his family from the threat of Thrawn

6. Luke Skywalker/Leia Organa/Rey Skywalker

Luke exiled him and swore to stop training future Jedi, after the incident with his nephew, Ben Solo. Enter Rey, it took a lot of convincing from her, but eventually Luke decided to train Rey in what he knew. Once he died, and became one with the force, Leia took it upon herself to continue Rey’s training. Both siblings had a huge influence on the Jedi Rey became, that she took their last name as hers at the end of The Rise Of Skywalker

5. Darth Sidious/Darth Vader

From the moment Sidious met Anakin, he was able to manipulate him. As the events of Revenge Of The Sith unfolded, we saw more of Palpatine's manipulation in action, as Anakin fell further and further to the dark side. Eventually, Palpatine even gave him the new name of Darth Vader. Vader would do various tasks for Palpainte after being turned into a Sith Lord, as shown in the comics, and he was not happy about it. Their relationship is not a healthy one, and both seem to despise each other.

4. Anakin Skywalker/Ahsoka Tano

Anakin was reluctant to have a Padawan, but later agreed to it, and thus introduced us to Ahsoka Tano. We first met her in The Clone Wars movie, and then the TV show of the same name, where we got to see the two of them grow up. Ahsoka is a lot like Anakin and doesn’t do everything by the book, which Obi-Wan isn’t always the happiest about. The two have a sibling dynamic, but unfortunately, this dynamic is broken once Ahsoka leaves the Jedi order at the end of season 5. She reunites with Anakin in season 7, but their relationship is never the same.

3. Obi-Wan Kenobi/Yoda/Luke Skywalker

Luke Skywalker is an untraditional Jedi. He was trained when Jedi were supposed to be in hiding and was much older than the normal Padawan age. He also had two masters. His first was Obi-Wan. He knew Obi-Wan as Ben, and while Obi-Wan didn’t really train him, he taught Luke a lot about what it means to be a Jedi. He continued this too even when he became a force ghost. Yoda trained Luke in the art of the Jedi. We saw this in Empire Strikes Back, and we see what Yoda’s teachings yielded when we see Luke again in Return Of The Jedi. Here he is an extremely powerful Jedi and is able to confront his father and Darth Sidious, and can resist the dark side.

2. Qui-Gon Jinn/Obi-Wan Kenobi

Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan could not have been more different, so much so, that Obi-Wan was worried that Qui-Gon was going to give him up as a Padawan. The book Master and Apprentice by Claudia Gray, gives insight into their relationship, before the events of The Phantom Menace. The two are shown to have different ideas about how to go on with their plan, and it eventually all works out. By the time of the first movie, the two have a mutual respect for each other, even if they both have different ideas about how much the council should be involved.

1. Obi-Wan Kenobi/Anakin Skywalker

Anakin and Obi-Wan

This is the best master and apprentice pairing in Star Wars. When Qui-Gon found a young Anakin on Tatooine, he vowed to train him as his own Padawan, as he thought that Obi-Wan was finally ready to become a Jedi Knight. Unfortunately, Qui-Gon was killed, so Obi-Wan took on the task of training Anakin. While the two of them are quite different, they end up being like brothers. They both have respect for each other and make an amazing team. So when Anakin finally turned to the dark side, it was extremely heartbreaking for the once close Jedi, to have to fight each other.

Without the various master and apprentice relationships in the franchise, Star Wars would be very different. The franchise is at its best when it focuses on its characters and their relationships. Some are more fleshed out than others, but with the addition of multiple shows, we get to see some of these relationships become much deeper. Not all of these relationships are ones you want to root for, but are still important to the stories within the Star Wars universe.
