5 Interesting Behind The Scenes Facts About 'Solo: A Star Wars Story’
Love it or hate Solo: A Star Wars Story is a fun addition to the Star Wars galaxy. The film shows us how Han Solo and Chewbacca first met, explains why Han is so untrusting, and gives us Qi’ra who is arguably one of the most underutilized characters in Star Wars. The 2018 film may not have been well received by fans, but those of us who did enjoy it are still wishing we could get more from at least some of the characters that were introduced. Qi’ra would be the perfect character for a new series! Let’s learn a little more about the film and take a look at 5 behind the scenes facts!
5. Messy Production
In early 2012 George Lucas agreed to have Lawrence Kasden write a screenplay for a Han Solo film that would act as the first standalone Star Wars prequel film. Unfortunately, later that year Disney acquired LucasFilms, and Kasden was forced to leave the project to act as co-writer for the script of The Force Awakens. This left his son Jonathan Kasden to pick up the project. After the film started filming many on the project were unhappy with the comedia approach and the directors were fired forcing the project to be delayed even further the film ended up being released after Rogue One making it the second standalone prequel film not the first.

4. Casting Changes
I can’t imagine anyone other than Paul Bettany playing the film’s villain Dryden Vos, but apparently, the role was originally meant for Michael K. Williams. Due to scheduling conflicts with reshoots, the role was given to Bettany and rewritten to be mostly human rather than the human-animal hybrid that it was originally supposed to be. I think Bettany was the perfect casting choice for this role! Darth Maul also makes a cameo at the end of the film and originally the voice actor used in Episode I: The Phantom Menace, Peter Serfinowicz, returned but it was later decided that Sam Witwer would be voicing the characters since they wanted it to be consistent with recent episodes of The Clone Wars and Rebels.
3. Lando’s Time To Shine
While it wasn’t planned Donald Glover’s portrayal of Lando Calrissian stole the show and has led fans to beg for more Lando content. According to Ron Howard, there are currently no plans to move forward with a Lando project, but thanks to fan outcry it is not off the table. While I loved every casting choice in this movie it was pretty clear that Glover was the real star of the show and I would love to see more Lando content with him as the lead.
2. George Lucas Wanted Young Han
According to Howard, it was George Lucas himself who wanted to explore Han Solo’s younger years. When the film was first announced many fans were upset with the direction, but I think it’s pretty interesting that the idea came from the creator of Star Wars himself. It makes sense to me that we would explore Han’s youth because we have done this with most of the other main characters in Star Wars. Luke and Leia’s younger years are discussed and explored throughout the films and shows, Chewbacca’s younger years are shown in episodes of The Clone Wars, and Anakin’s younger years are the focus of the prequel trilogy. Han Solo was one of the only main characters with a blank space for their origin.
1. Lots Of Improvising
After the original directors of the film were fired it was rumored that it was partially due to too much improvisation. Howard stated that this was not true and that while he was working on the film, many of the cast members improvised their lines, especially Donald Glover and Phoebe Waller-Bridge. I love when cast members are encouraged to improvise because it adds to the uniqueness of each character.
