4 Times Samwise Gamgee Was The Hero (And 1 Time He Wasn't)
Samwise Gamgee is the hero of The Lord of the Rings. Frodo had to carry the burden of the One Ring, but he would never have made it to Mount Doom without Sam. Sam remained positive until the very end. He believed in the good of everything around him, no matter how dark it seemed. He was the reason Frodo was able to complete the journey, and destroy the ring.

4. Sam Followed Frodo To Mordor
At the end of The Fellowship of the Ring, Frodo decided to leave the comfort of the fellowship and make his way to Mordor alone. However, Sam caught up to him and almost drowned. Frodo saved him and told him to go back. Sam insisted that he must follow Frodo because he made a promise to Gandalf. Even if he didn’t make that promise, Sam probably would have joined his friend anyway. This ended up being a turning point in the story. Sam decided to give up the comfort the fellowship would offer him to help his friend journey to Mordor and destroy the ring.

3. Sam Saved Frodo From Shelob
In The Return of the King Frodo told Sam to turn back. Frodo did not appreciate the fact that Sam did not like or trust Gollum, and chose Gollum over him. However, Gollum tricked Frodo and led him to the lair of the spider Shelob. He ended up trapped in Shelob’s web, and paralyzed by her stinger. It was a matter of time before she returned to eat him. Sam returned for Frodo and fought Shelob with the help of the phial Galadriel gave him, and the sword Sting.
2. Sam Saved Frodo From The Orcs
Sam saw Frodo wrapped in the web of Shelob and thought he had died from her venom. He then made the decision to continue the journey and complete Frodo’s mission to destroy the One Ring. Sam would later discover that Frodo was merely paralyzed by the giant spider’s venom and he was not taken by some orcs. Sam came to the rescue again and fought through the orcs to reach Frodo.
1. Sam Carried Frodo to Mount Doom
Sam and Frodo finally made it to Mount Doom. Before they could make it to up the mountain, Frodo collapsed under the weight of the One Ring and the pain of the long journey. Sam then told Frodo, “I may not be able to carry it for you, but I can carry you.” He picked Frodo up and carried him the rest of the way.

Sam Never Trusted Gollum
Frodo tried to see the good in Gollum and who he once was. He tried to get to know Gollum and even called him by his original name Smeagol. Since they also needed his help, Frodo tried to win Gollum's trust. Sam, on the other hand, did not like nor trust Gollum. He thought Gollum was up to something nefarious, and would eventually betray them. This led to a confrontation between the two Hobbits, and Frodo ended up choosing Gollum over Sam. Frodo asked Sam to leave, which Sam regretfully did. Sam ended up being right about Gollum and went back to Frodo to save him.
Throughout The Lord of the Rings series, we saw many heroic moments from Sam. No matter what happened between him and Frodo, he always came back for his friend. He was the reason Frodo was able to make it to Mount Doom. Samwise Gamgee was just as much of a hero as Frodo was, and he wa also the ultimate friend.
