As we get closer and closer to the first official day of fall, September 22, streaming services are filling their offerings with copious amounts of spooky content. Unfortunately, this means that it can start to get a bit overwhelming when looking for something to get you in the spooky season mood.

Whether you are in the mood for something scary or just filled to the brim with all things fall, I have got you covered! Here are my picks for the 10 shows you should check out this spooky season!

10. YOU (2018-Present)

YOU is not a horror show many fans typically expect when looking for something to add to their spooky season watchlist. Instead, it explores the dangers and horrors hidden within our everyday lives and the people we cross paths with. The show definitely makes you want to lock your doors and reconsider who you let into your inner circle.

YOU is available on Netflix.

9. The Vampire Diaries (2009-2017)

Like many entries on this list, The Vampire Diaries has a more spooky aesthetic than full-on horror. The show can feel more vampire soap than horror, making it perfect for anyone who isn’t a big fan of being scared. If you want sexy vampires, some blood, and maybe a few scary moments, then this is the perfect show to add to your watchlist.

The Vampire Diaries is available on HBO Max.

8. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (2018-2020)

CAOS was best in its first two seasons, in my opinion. They explored different variations of witchcraft and religion while keeping the narrative fun and, in some seasons, sexy. The show also has a great horror element, with the different monsters, spells, and death woven into every episode.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is available on Netflix.

7. First Kill (2022-2022)

This show gives the typical Romeo and Juliet story a fantastic horror makeover. Exploring the world of vampires and monster hunters, First Kill is perfect for any spooky season watch list! The content is creepy enough, but the series’ atmosphere simply adds to its overall spookiness.

First Kill is available on Netflix.

6. Scream Queens (2015-2016)

This is an entry for my fellow horror-comedy fans! Scream Queens was created by American Horror Story creator Ryan Murphy and starred the ultimate scream queen herself, Jamie Lee Curtis. While season one is the only good season, in my opinion, it is an absolute blast. Murphy brought in all of the elements that made campy horror films so much fun and put them into a modern sorority setting. This show is great for the spooky season, especially if you want something that will make you laugh!

Scream Queens is available on Hulu.

5. American Horror Story (2011-Present)

American Horror Story is definitely the most gruesome entry on this list. I love this anthology series, and one of my favorite things is that each season is like a new horror film, so you can pick and choose your preferred theme and just watch that season. My personal favorite seasons were season 3 AHS Coven, season 8 AHS Apocolypse, and season 9 AHS 1984.

American Horror Story is available on Hulu

4. Stranger Things (2016-Present)

Stranger Things is great for people wanting to watch something to put them in the spooky season spirit but who aren’t huge fans of horror. While the show definitely has some scary moments, especially the creatures, overall, it is just a fun, creepy show that explores what might lie just outside our current reality.

Stranger Things is available on Netflix

3. Courage the Cowardly Dog (1999-2002)

This show is a classic and will forever be one the best shows to watch during the spooky season. It is also great because it is appropriate for most ages so you can watch it as a family! What I love most about the show is that you can binge-watch it like a movie, or you can just watch your favorites. This show explored both supernatural and real-life horrors, making it even scarier, in my opinion.

Courage the Cowardly Dog is available on HBO Max.

2. Pretty Little Liars Original Sin (2022-Present)

This show took fans by storm when it was released earlier this year. While it carries the name Pretty Little Liars and does mention specific aspects of the original series, that is where the similarities end. Original Sin is geared toward a much older audience than its predecessor and dives into difficult topics such as suicide, sexual assault, and teen pregnancy. In addition, the show takes on the stereotypical slasher genre and turns it on its head. It is the perfect slasher content to consume this spooky season!

Pretty Little Liars Original Sin is available on HBO Max.

1. Over the Garden Wall (2014)

An animated creepy man with bad teeth

Over the Garden Wall was a Cartoon Network mini-series released in 2014. The show perfectly falls, from the muted orange, red, and brown tones to the eerily beautiful music piped into each 11-minute episode. The series is a fan favorite on TikTok and has slowly made itself more known since being added to HBO Max’s catalog. While the show is geared toward children, it tackles some difficult subjects as the story unfolds.

Over the Garden Wall is available on HBO Max
