10 ‘Star Wars’ Deaths That Broke Us

Since the prequels, no character is safe in Star Wars, not even the fan favorites. Anyone can become ‘one with the Force’ at any moment. Star Wars fans have become scared to get attached to main characters, just in case they get killed off and used as an emotional plot device for the next season. Here are 10 of the most heartbreaking onscreen deaths.

10. Maarva Andor

Cassian Andor’s adopted mother, and (as far as we know) his only living relative. Maarva was an integral part of the community on Ferrix. She refused to leave her home, even after Cassian went on the run and her health declined, but she rediscovered her rebellious spirit and made a recording that sparked a riot at her funeral. Cassian is inspired by her last act and ends the series by deciding to go fight the Empire.

The disabled clone who cared for his brothers on Kamino. He’d always wanted to go into battle, but had been left behind in Tipoca City until the Confederacy of Independent Systems attacked. Clone 99 risked his life to lead the younger clones to safety and became a key member of the security team, but he was killed by a battle droid before he managed to evacuate.

8. Darth Maul

No, not the death you’re thinking. Believe it or not, Darth Maul survived Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. He gets off Naboo after being cut in half, acquires spider-style legs, goes mad, becomes sane again, regains human legs, and then hunts down Obi-Wan Kenobi for revenge.

Maul goes through all that effort, only for Old Ben to wipe the floor (or sand) with him on Tatooine. Obi-Wan holds Maul as he dies, but the Sith apprentice’s last words aren’t cries of hatred or vengeance; they acknowledge how Palpatine has manipulated them both. It’s a real tear-jerker.

7. Tech

One of the original members of Clone Force 99 from Star Wars: The Bad Batch, Tech had just found happiness when he met his untimely end. The clones had finally found a home on Pabu, and Tech had begun a relationship with one of its residents, Phee. On a mission to Eriadu, Clone Force 99 was attacked by stormtroopers. To save the lives of Omega and his ‘brothers’, Tech cuts a cable car free, knowing he will fall. It was shocking for audiences, who didn’t see the main character’s demise coming; however, the writers also gave us a child’s eye view, via Omega, who spent the rest of the series cycling through the stages of grief.

6. Fives

Yes, it’s another clone. David Filoni has not gone easy on the genetic descendants of Jango. Fives was a main character in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and the first person to discover the chips that eventually influence the clones to execute Order 66. Palpatine makes sure that everyone thinks poor Fives has gone crazy. When Fives tries to get help from Rex and Anakin Skywalker, he is shot for his troubles. If only they had listened…

5. Kanan Jarrus

Kanan Jarrus, the mentor of Ezra Bridger and long-time love interest of Hera Syndulla. It took four seasons of Star Wars: Rebels for the pair to finally get together. But after putting him through Order 66, killing his master, and blinding him, Dave Filoni wasn’t going to give him a happy ending. Kanan died saving Hera, using his force abilities to protect her from a blast. The explosion briefly restores his sight, and he gets to see her one last time. The real kicker is that Hera is pregnant with Kanan’s child in this episode. With his Force abilities, in his last moments, we can only hope he knows.

4. Every Rebel on Scarif

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is arguably the best Star Wars film since the original trilogy, but it’s a mental rollercoaster. The film spends two hours and thirteen minutes making viewers fall in love with a band of quirky-yet-determined rebels. The plucky Jyn Erso, Cassian Andor, and their crew make it to Scarif to steal the Death Star plans. The audience become attached, and we’re rooting for them.

Star Wars fans in the first viewings must have guessed what was coming. All the way through the original trilogy and Legends (in the EU, it was Havet Storm and Han Solo’s girlfriend Bria Tharen), they emphasize that the crew who retrieved the info did not make it back.

However, it still hurt when Tarkin gave the order, and much of the planet blew up, without Bodhi knowing if the Death Star plans ever made it to their destination.

3. Duchess Satine Kryze

Obi-Wan Kenobi and Duchess Satine Kryze had a mostly off-screen romance, but viewers are given enough information in Star Wars: The Clone Wars to know that Obi-Wan would have run off with her in his early years if he’d been given the chance. And of course, there’s ‘that’ fan theory about Korkie.

Darth Maul shows up on Mandalore, still holding a grudge about being cut in half. To get revenge, he kills Satine in front of Kenobi. This is one of the best scenes in the franchise; the interaction between Maul and Kenobi is incredible. Satine is run through with the darksaber, and we see Obi-Wan break down as Maul gleefully watches on. Watch with tissues.

2. Qui-Gon Jinn

In Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace, it was bad enough that viewers had an entire movie to get attached to Liam Neeson as a warm father figure Jedi Knight, only to watch him take a lightsaber to the stomach. Years later, it’s apparent that Qui-Gon Jinn (made obvious by the “Duel of the Fates” score) was the only Jedi capable of keeping Anakin on the light side of the Force. His death is even sadder because it guaranteed Padmé’s death, Order 66, and the Jedi purge.

1. Leia Organa Solo

Carrie Fisher passed away after completing work on Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Director J.J. Abrams finished Star Wars: The Rise of The Skywalker using a combination of CGI and body doubles (her daughter Billie Lourd was used as a body double in several scenes). Star Wars fans knew that this film would be the last time we would see Princess Leia on screen, so when she died saving her son, with Billie Lourd in shot, it was truly emotional and poignant. Carrie Fisher was a role model for everyone, but especially for the female fans who watched the Princess master not just one world, but the entire galaxy.
