‘Uncharted’ Movie Review From Someone Who Has Never Played ‘Uncharted’

Yes, lets get this out of the way. I have never played Uncharted. It has been on my “to play” list for years, but I have never picked up a copy of the game. As big of a fan I am of The Last of Us and being someone who is so excited to watch HBO’s The Last of Us series, as well as honestly anything Naughty Dog makes, for some reason Uncharted has flown under my radar and off my game list thus far. I will say this now. After watching this movie, I am going to check out the Nathan Drake Collection. I’m SOLD!

The Acting

Walking into this movie not knowing anything about the movie or character of Nathan Drake, I think that Tom Holland’s portrayal was very believable. He perfectly conveyed an Indiana Jones-esque character, which I am assuming is the point. I got big National Treasure feels from the cast as a whole. Being a huge Tom Holland fan in general, I was pleasantly surprised and glad I did not see him as Spider-Man. In a lot of cases with big actors, it is weird to see them play other roles, at least for me. Mark Wahlberg did an amazing job playing Victor Sullivan. Not knowing much, if anything, about these characters going in I am sure takes away from the significance of their portrayal. However, their interpretation of the characters made this movie for me.

The Story

I am a big fan of action-adventure movies, and Uncharted brings suspense and mystery to the audience from the very beginning. The opening sequence from this movie had me immediately hooked. The betrayals, the suspense, and the twists and turns from beginning to end kept me on the edge of my seat.

The Action

What can I say? Amazing, my heart was racing from the opening sequence. The visuals and suspense of watching a character fight bad guys while dangling out of an airplane had me excited and rooting for him from the get-go. I really enjoyed the well-choreographed fight scenes and the heist in the beginning of the movie. The final climatic battle was honestly one of the most exciting movie sequences I have seen in a long time.

Final Thoughts

Honestly, I was very surprised at how good this movie was, especially being a video game movie (Looking at you, Super Mario Bros.). Overall Uncharted is a fun thrill ride of a film, with great action, story, and engaging characters. Whether you have played the games or this is your first time being introduced to these characters you are in for a fun time. I will most definitely be picking up an Uncharted game soon so I can experience more adventures with Nathan Drake. I do hope that there is a sequel to this with Tom Holland, as he was phenomenal and brought so much to this movie.

Rating: 9.5/10
