“Kraven The Hunter” Spoiler-Free Review

Kraven The Hunter is the newest and last movie in the Sony Marvelverse. Kraven isn't perfect by any means, and there's a lot wrong with it, but it is also not the worst movie ever. It’s worth seeing it with someone else, as then you two can laugh along with some of the terrible dialogue choices. It also means your experience will be much more enjoyable, as you have someone else to get through this movie with.

The movie starts with Kraven (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) going, and then escaping a Russian prison. It then flashes back to when Kraven and his brother Dimitri (Fred Hechinger) were kids and explains how Kraven got his powers. Eventually, the movie goes back to the present day, and Kraven starts down a path of vengeance.

RELATED:

Dimitri gets captured by Rhino, to lure Kraven out to defeat him once and for all. The final showdown consists of the two of them and a lot of wild animals. Kraven’s final outfit wasn’t revealed until the very end of the movie, which made was a waste considering there will be no sequel. It’s an origin story for a character whose story won’t be continued anytime soon.

The film suffered with the runtime. The movie could've been much shorted and would've benefitted from it even. There was almost too much buildup to the final fight between Kraven and the Rhino, and many moments leading up to it could've been cut. The scenes with young Kraven while important to see why he becomes the way he is, could've also been shortened a bit. There were also times were the CGI was a bit goofy looking, which would take you out of the film.

Another low point was its dialogue. While it wasn’t all bad, some lines were laughable. Some lines were even repeated multiple times throughout the movie.  Lastly, the ending had some weird editing with black screens, that made me think the movie was over twice when it was not.

On the other hand, the action scenes were exciting and bloody. Aaron Taylor-Johnson was an excellent choice to play Kraven, and without Spider-Man, you got to learn more about the character himself, which was a plus. Fred Hechinger was another high point of the movie.

Dimitri was an interesting character and a complete opposite of his brother. He played the character extremely well, so much so, you might not see the twist at the end coming. He has had a busy year also starring in Gladiator II and Thelma. While Russell Crowe is a good actor, his Russian accent in this movie was not. The music was pretty good and kept with the tone of the movie.

All in all, Kraven The Hunrer is a fun movie. It’s a movie that is better shared with someone else. It’s not the worst in the Sonyverse, but that’s not saying much. If you go, at least go to see Aaron Taylor-Johnson kick some serious ass and look good doing it, because the action scenes are the most enjoyable part of the movie.

Kraven The Hunter is now playing in theaters everywhere.

Rating: 6.5/10
