'Gladiator II' Spoiler-Free Review
Gladiator II is a spectacle of epic proportions. There is plenty of betrayal, violence, and treachery throughout the film. The best part, however, is the awesome combat sequences. It sometimes pales in comparison to the original film, but it is still an exciting sequel.
The story is long. At some points, it's a bit too long, and the film could’ve easily shaved off some time by cutting some stuff out. Lucius (Paul Mescal) becomes a Gladiator, hellbent on revenge after his home is invaded by the Roman army led by General Acacius (Pedro Pascal). He fights for Macrinus (Denzel Washington), who has a plan to overthrow the ruthless Emporers of Rome, Geta (Joseph Quinn), and Caracalla (Fred Hechinger). There is a lot of blood, death, and violence, which is what makes the movie so exciting. There is at least somewhat of a happy ending.
While you don’t need to see the original film to enjoy the sequel, you should still watch it because it’s a masterpiece. However, there are many callbacks to the original film, and a major plot point relates to the first one as well. The ending of the first film may be spoiled for those who haven’t seen it. The beginning of this film has a beautiful painting sequence depicting what happened in Gladiator. It was a great way to summarize the first film.
RELATED:
The coliseum scenes were some of the best in the entire film, granted, that is what the film is about, but it was exciting every single time. Each fight differed from the last, with the stakes being higher each time. The naval battle that occurred at one point was one of my favorites. The ship combat was exciting, even if the CGI at some points was a bit wonky. Lucius was always a tough guy, which made him the perfect Gladiator, but seeing him grow so much and lead his fellow Gladiators near the end was great. The combat was extremely fluid and exciting to watch.
One of the best parts of the film was its score. It never failed to be epic and set the scene perfectly each time. It made me want to ride into battle myself. The costumes were incredible, especially Denzel Washington’s wardrobe. His outfits were always colorful and eccentric and some of the best in the film. Every time Pedro Pascal came on the screen, he had a different set of armor on, and each one was cooler than the last.
The acting was incredible, and Paul Mescal stole the show, which makes sense, considering he was the main character. It was great to see how much his character grew throughout the film. Pedro Pascal is great in everything he’s in, and this was no different. Denzel Washington can’t be beat when it comes to his acting ability. He plays all his roles exceptionally well, and this character is no different.
While the sequel isn’t as good as the first film, it’s still entertaining. Ridley Scott did an incredible job with this movie, and if you enjoy a film with great fight sequences and music, then this is a must-watch.
