'Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga' Spoiler-Free Review

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is truly the action movie of the summer. It’s loud, and orange, and once it builds up that momentum, it never stops. It’s an excellent prequel, where we learn more about one of the coolest women in film history. George Miller absolutely kills it once again with this installment in the Mad Max franchise.

The movie is set up much differently than Mad Max: Fury Road. There are five chapters, each telling a different part of Furiosa's story. We see her grow throughout the film, with her being a child in the first few chapters. It takes time for her story to be told and this causes the beginning of the film to be a bit slow. She is taken from her family, by Dementus (Chris Hemsworth). He is ruthless and wants to take over the Citadel. We all know Immortan Joe is horrible but somehow, I think Dementus is worse. Dementus confronts Joe, and it does not go well. However, Furiosa is given up in the exchange, and Joe is his familiar creepy self towards her. She is acclimated into the life of the Citadel and eventually blends in with the War Boys. Later, she proves herself on a mission and learns everything she needs to know to survive. As the movie continues, she is able to climb the ranks of Joe’s army. There is fight, after fight, after fight, something that Fury Road fans are familiar with, and each one is exciting. We also get to see how she loses her arm, which is one of the grossest scenes in the movie, and definitely not for the faint of heart. She eventually grows into the kickass Furiosa we’re familiar with. The movie ends with the perfect lead into Fury Road.

While it might be impossible to imagine anyone else besides Charlize Theron playing the role of Furiosa, Anya Taylor-Joy is an absolute powerhouse. She embodies the role extremely well, so much so that you forget she didn't play her originally. Alyla Browne plays a young Furiosa and does an incredible job. Chris Hemsworth plays Dementus, the villain of the film. I have never seen Chris Hemsworth scarier than in this film. He played the role extremely well, and he got what he deserved at the end, which was extremely satisfying.

The movie is lore-heavy, not only with Furiosa’s story but with the Wasteland too. The film's beginning also gives us insight into how the world became this way.  In Furiosa, we get to see some additional settlements, such as Gastown and Bullet Farm, which were both mentioned in Mad Mad: Fury Road. We also got to see where Furiosa grew up, and the women that raised her. We get to see them in action again, just like in Fury Road when they help Furiosa and Max fight off Joe and his men.

Furiosa lives up to the hype, and while it’s not on the same level as Fury Road, it comes extremely close. At times, it is just as ridiculous as the first one, but also much angrier. The movie is depressing at times but humor is scattered throughout, especially from Chris Hemsworth’s character. With a runtime of 2 hours and 30 minutes, it may seem daunting, but I promise, that with everything going on, it goes by fast. If you are a fan of Fury Road, this movie is a must-see, and is one of the best films of the year.
