Who Is Titania?
At the end of the first episode of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, a supervillain crashes through the courtroom wall and throws a desk at the jury. This forces Jennifer Walters to reveal her She-Hulk identity to the world to save the people in the courtroom. This sets in motion most of the events of the next two episodes. The supervillain, played by Jameela Jamil, is identified as Titania and a social media influencer, but the audience is not given anything else. So, who is Titania?
Titania’s real name is Mary MacPherran. She was a preemie and remained frail, poor, and small throughout her childhood and teen years. She was constantly bullied by the popular girls and only had one friend, Marsha Rosenberg. Mary and Marsha were taken from their Denver suburb to the planet Battleworld. There they met Dr. Doom who offered them superpowers in exchange for fighting on his side. They both accepted. That’s when Mary became Titania and Marsha became Volcana.

Mary basically became the opposite of what she once had been. She grew to a muscular, and voluptuous, 6’6”. In place of her timidity is brashness (with one notable exception). She is powerful enough to rival Thor and She-Hulk in strength. Her body is impervious to projectiles and heat and cold. She has superhuman endurance. She works out to keep getting stronger and is sometimes enhanced by power gems and magic cloaks.
One of Titania’s early fights was with Spiderman. Spiderman beat her easily despite being less powerful. The loss was so humiliating that Titania was afraid of, and avoided, Spiderman from then on.
Titania also started a romantic relationship with fellow supervillain Absorbing Man, aka Carl “Crusher” Creel. They eventually get married. Creel tries to get Titania to end their life of crime, but Titania fails to stay on the straight and narrow.
Despite her immense power, Titania is not a very good criminal. She is beaten, mostly easily, by many of the Marvel Heroes. Everyone from Captain America to She-Hulk beats her and imprisons her at some point. Lucky for her, she is broken out of prison as often as she is put there. Titania becomes obsessed with She-Hulk, probably because their powers are so similar. She is constantly training to get stronger for the sole purpose of defeating She-Hulk, but it never ends well for Titania.
Nowhere in the comics is Titania a social media influencer, so, clearly, She-Hulk is taking the character in a new direction. Yet, Titania’s quick and humiliating defeat is perfectly aligned with the comics. It will be interesting to see where the show goes with the character and how much will come from the comics. Hopefully, we don’t have to wait much longer to find out.
