Where Does 'Andor' Fit in 'Star Wars' Canon?
It is announced at the beginning of Andor that the show takes place in the year 5 Before the Battle of Yavin (BBY). That puts the show fourteen years after the formation of the Empire and just five years before the events of Rogue One and A New Hope. That is a significant time in the galaxy. The Empire is still consolidating its power and the Rebellion is finally, slowly, starting to come together. Here are some of the more important events that are contemporaneous with Andor.
For starters, Star Wars: Rebels begins in 5 BBY. That is the year when Ezra Bridger joins the Spectres: Hera Syndulla, Kanan Jarrus, Sabine Wren, Zeb, and, of course, Chopper. It is also the year when Ezra discovers that he is force sensitive and begins his Jedi training. We also learn, through Rebels, that in 5 BBY, Bail Organa is actively bringing together rebels to fight against the Empire and that Ahsoka Tano, known as Fulcrum at this point, is doing the same. In Andor, we see Luthen Rael, Mon Mothma, and Saw Gerrera also recruiting people for the fight. In other words, 5 BBY is where the Rebellion starts as an organized movement.

Speaking of Saw Gerrera, 5 BBY is also the year that Jyn Erso was left behind by Saw. On its own, this may not seem like a big event. However, it, in a sense, puts Rogue One into motion. If Jyn was never abandoned, the Rebels wouldn’t have been able to use her to get an audience with Saw. It is unlikely that she would have visited the base on Yavin or led the attack on Scarif.
In 5 BBY, an armed rebellion against the Empire broke out in the Atrivis Sector. The rebellion was soon ended by the imperial navy, but it didn’t crush the spirit of the Atrivis Resistance Group. That allowed Mon Mothma to recruit them to her alliance.
Finally, several things had started before 5 BBY that were still ongoing. First, the Great Jedi Purge was still happening. The Inquisitors were still active and giving Ezra and Kanan lots of trouble. Next, the Empire took control of the Free Trade sector. Finally, the Emperor was tightening his grip on the Senate. He made it harder and harder for the few resistors who were left to enact any legislation.
As you can see, not only are Andor's events important, but lots of other important things are happening simultaneously. It will be interesting to see if Andor makes any attempt to tie the disconnected threads together. If not, it’s still a fascinating time in the history of the Rebellion that eventually ends the Empire ten years later in 5 ABY.
