What’s Up With The Ghormans In ‘Star Wars: Andor’?
Since its premiere, Andor has been building towards something big. Serving as a prequel to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the streaming series stars Diego Luna as Cassian Andor before the events of Rogue One. With a grounded, grittier tone and a focus on lesser-seen aspects of the Rebel Alliance and the Galactic Empire, Andor has taken the juggernaut franchise in a direction rarely seen in onscreen Star Wars media.
We’ve also got an in-depth look at the early life of Cassian, along with strong parallels to our modern-day political climate. Among the series’ most prominent themes is the rise of fascism and how authoritarian states take control so quickly and thoroughly. In Andor’s first few episodes, we see how the Empire maintains its grip on several words, including Ferrix, Aldhani, Niamos, and Coruscant. But one world that has been brought up more than once by a few characters in the series is the planet Ghorman and its indigenous population, the Ghormans.

While not much is known about the planet itself or its people, the Ghormans have an important place in Star Wars continuity as established by the Second Edition of The Rebel Alliance Sourcebook. In said sourcebook, Ghorman is revealed to have been the site of an atrocity committed by notorious Imperial Grand Moff Wilhuff Tarkin. Upon arriving at the planet and witnessing an anti-tax protest by hundreds of Ghorman demonstrators, Tarkin responded by landing his ship on the crowd, killing and injuring hundreds.
This grievous act would be the final straw that spurred the anti-Imperial members of the Senate to form the Alliance to Restore the Republic. Referred to as the Ghorman Massacre, this event would be canonized in the Star Wars Rebels episode “Secret Cargo.” In the episode, Mon Mothma officially leaves the Empire in response to the massacre and is rescued by Phoenix Squadron before openly declaring rebellion against Emperor Palpatine.
As of now, the Ghormans have been mentioned in three of Andor’s eight currently aired episodes. In the fourth episode, “Aldhani,” Mon Mothma says to her husband Perrin that a group of Imperial senators recently voted to cut off Ghorman’s supply lines. In the sixth episode, “The Eye,” Mon Mothma proposes a bill to get more supplies to the Ghormans, only to be ignored due to a heist that had just occurred on Aldhani. In the eighth episode, “Narkina 5”, Saw Gerrera mentions the existence of the Ghorman front, which is likely a rebel movement against the Empire formed by the Ghormans.
Could Andor be building up to the canon Ghorman Massacre which led to the official declaration of the Rebel Alliance? We know that Andor’s second season will be taking place during the timeframe in which “Secret Cargo” occurs. If any Star Wars series is likely to show a mass execution like the Ghorman Massacre onscreen, that would be Andor.
