What Is 'Werewolf By Night'?

These days it seems as if the MCU has everything. It has multiverses, multiple timelines, and multiple Spider-Men, and that’s not even touching any of the large-scale potential coming up including Antman and The Wasp: Quantumania, The Fantastic Four, and Secret Wars. They’ve even been getting some holiday love last year with Hawkeye, and this year’s Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.
As if all that and so much more wasn’t already on the table, they’re adding in a Halloween special this year. No, it’s not Morbius (you’re probably relieved), and it’s also not Blade, although he is coming in later. It’s a little-known wonder from the 70s called Werewolf by Night. The special will be released to Disney+ on October 7th and will be considered part of phase 4 of the MCU. Directed by Michael Giacchino, produced by Kevin Feige, and written by Peter Cameron and Heather Quinn, the special will star Gael Garcia Bernal as the titular character, Jack Russel who as the title suggests, turns into a werewolf once hit by moonlight. This transformation only started after he turned 18, and is due to a hereditary condition within his family. Other characters who will be showing up are Elsa Bloodstone, a monster hunter played by Laura Donnelly, and Man-Thing. The special will be Marvel’s first horror project, although the series has dabbled into horror beats in the past.

The character has an interesting history. In the early 70s when werewolves and vampires were no longer banned, Marvel immediately created the character of Werewolf by Night. Although Jack is not the only character to have the title, he is the most well-known and has had the most page time as him. He has appeared alongside teams like the X-Men and the Avengers, giving plenty of opportunity for him to come into the MCU at a later date, on the assumption that nothing to prevent that happens in the series. The character has also crossed paths with Moon Knight, who was recently introduced into the MCU in his own series played by Oscar Isaac, although the relationship between the two characters was less than harmonious most times. It is currently unknown if the character will appear in future works.
