What Is ‘Star Wars: The Acolyte’?
The Mandalorian rekindled the popularity of the Star Wars franchise like the sequels never could. The animated Star Wars series, The Clone Wars, Rebels, and the more recent series such as, The Bad Batch, The Book of Boba Fett, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Andor helped flesh out the details of the events that panned out between the movies and have given a deeper perspective into the psyche of the characters. However, that leaves little room for surprises. And the characters’ fates are often known to the fans. This is where the recently announced series Star Wars: The Acolyte stands out, making this series the most anticipated. Though the details about the series are shrouded in mystery, we bring you all the information out there.
In Star Wars terminology, an acolyte refers to a Sith apprentice, emphasizing that this show will revolve around the rise of the dark side. During the Disney Investor Day event in 2020, Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, officially announced the series stating that,
“The Acolyte is a mystery-thriller that will take the audience into a galaxy of shadowy secrets and emerging dark side powers in the final days of the High Republic era.”

The series is set about a century before the events of The Phantom Menace and thus will introduce us to an entirely new timeline with a new set of characters.
The High Republic Era has been described as a 200-year-long period after the Jedi-Sith War, which saw the Sith’s apparent defeat at the hands of the Jedi. It was a peaceful time, and the Jedi were at the peak of their glory. However, unbeknownst to the Jedi, the Sith lurked in the shadows following the Rule of Two devised by Darth Bane. The Acolyte may uncover how exactly the Sith survived and made their way into the Republic. Interestingly, Count Dooku was born toward the late High Republic Era and was taken into the Jedi Order to be trained under master Yoda. It will be exciting if we get to watch the corruption of Count Dooku.
Leslye Headland, the writer and executive producer of The Acolyte, said,
‘We’re taking a look at the political and personal and spiritual things that came up in a time period that we don’t know much about. My question when watching The Phantom Menace was always, ‘Well, how did things get to this point?’ How did we get to a point where a Sith Lord can infiltrate the Senate and none of the Jedi pick up on it? Like, what went wrong? What are the scenarios that led us to this moment?’
The Acolyte is set to begin filming in October 2022 and is expected to air on Disney+ in 2023. The cast includes Amandla Stenberg (Hunger Games), Jodie Turner-Smith (Queen & Slim), Lee Jung-Jae (Squid Game), Manny Jacinto (The Good Place), and Charlie Barnett (Russian Doll). Though their roles have not been revealed, Amandla Stenberg and Lee Jung-Jae will supposedly feature in lead roles. And now we wait!
