What Do We Know About The Planet Ahsoka Is From?

Ahsoka Tano is a member of the Togruta species from the small grassland planet of Shili, located in the Expansion Region of the galaxy. Shili is the home planet to this species, however StarWars.com states that they spread out to other colonies such as Kiros. Sadly, Kiros was overtaken by Zygerrian slavers during the Clone Wars. Not much is known about this small planet as fans get tastes of it throughout the franchise, leaving much room for the powers that be to further develop its visual interest with time. Shili is mentioned however, throughout the popular High Republic novels. Fans can see it in a flashback sequence as well in the episode titled “The Gathering” of Star Wars: The Clone Wars and most recently fans were able to get a glimpse of Shili in the episode titled “Life and Death” of Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi.

In the YouTube video, Know Your Planets episode, titled “Shili” Cameron Ohara discusses the planet, including its zodiac system which is called Ai. The constellation for this sign is comprised of blue dwarf stars. It is interesting to note that blue dwarf stars are predictive based, meaning scientists believe them to exist, however, our particular solar system just simply is not yet old enough to have witnessed one. This gives fans insight into the world building component that fantasy fans across the galaxy enjoy in Star Wars. On Coruscant for comparison, the sign is the same but goes by a different name, Genry.

Wookieepedia notes the beauty of the multicolored grasslands of the planet, Shili, as home to not just the Togrutas, but also interesting forms of wildlife, such as the Akul for example. The Akul is showcased in the Tales of the Jedi as well and are of interest because in the episode where fans are introduced to Shili and see Ahsoka as a youngling, the fierce sabretooth appearing creature confronts Ahsoka while on a hunting trip. The relationship between the species is a tense one, as the Togruta both fear and hunt the creature. Yet, this Akul appears to sense Ahsoka’s force sensitivity and returns her safely to her mother. Sadly, it is considered a right of passage for younglings to hunt this animal and if they can kill one, they retain bragging rights by wearing their teeth. Later in Ahsoka’s life she must have had an encounter with an Akul that did not end as amicably as her first.

Additionally, Wookieepedia notes that Shili is well known for creating holovids, demonstrating the technological advances that this small planet is capable of. It produced well known Togruta Jedi Master Skaak Ti as well as Ahsoka Tano in addition to Raana Tey and Ashla. Ahsoka was discovered on Shili by Jedi Master Plo Koon who brought her to the Jedi Temple on Coruscant, where she would begin her Jedi Training. She would of course go on to become the only padawan to be taught by Anakin Skywalker, and the only other person other than Obi Wan Kenobi to battle Darth Vader and successfully remove half of his helmet.

On the Wookieepedia Legends section for the planet Shili, it is the namesake for its star system and is in the Ehosiq sector of the Expansion Region specifically. Many Togrutas hold the forests there in high regard. In fact, it is because of the native region that the Togrutas specie’s rusty skin pigmentations can range from blue to red to green with characteristic white stripes in various places on their face and bodies.

These colorings are useful in camouflaging themselves in the tutugrass scrublands and valley canopy forests of the planet and aid them in hunting as well as evading predators. Per the Legends data listed on the Togrutas Wookieepedia page, this unique species is classified as carnivorous humanoid. The culture of Togrutas is collective, they see individualism as an odd way of living and work best under a better together approach, likely derived from their history in the forests of Shili, evading dangerous predators and hunting for their food.

As Tales of the Jedi continues to progress and hopefully in the highly anticipated Ahsoka mini-series on Disney+ fans will get to learn more about the lovely planet, Shili. Ahsoka is expected to be released in February 2023.
