This Is How Blasters Work In ‘Star Wars’
There are many types of weapons in the Star Wars universe, but one of the most common throughout the galaxy would be the blaster. A versatile weapon of many sizes, the blaster has a long history of use across many wars, and many factions, of the universe. But how does this technology work?
Unlike a laser that fired a continuous stream of energy, a blaster would fire off bolts of super-charged particle energy. Both energy pack and cartridge of energy-rich gas would be attached to a blaster, combining to create the blaster bolt whenever the trigger was pulled. That bolt would then be fired at high speed to hit whatever target was being aimed at.

The quality of gas used would produce different colours of bolt, with the most common colour being red. Higher quality gases would produce other colours such as green, while ion-charged gas would produce a blue bolt. No matter the colour, the effect upon hitting a target would be the same. Materials would be warped from the intense heat transferred from the energy, while organic targets would see fluids instantly vaporised, with nothing but the burned flesh remaining around the area that had been hit.
Much like the real world, there are no average statistics to be found for blasters, as there were so many variations on the technology. Accuracy, range, and firing speed would all be different depending on the build of the blaster. As an example, the weapon of the droid army – the E-5 – had a high fire speed but could easily overheat. While powerful, it was also inaccurate. Contrasting against that, the DC-15a – the weapon of the clone troopers – were bulky weapons, but far more accurate and with roughly the same power output.
The reason for the blaster being a common weapon throughout the galaxy would be due to it being a cheap weapon to own. The power pack and the gas cartridge were cheap to buy, being as cheap as a single meal if you knew who could offer them for that price. The power of them also meant the smallest of pistols would be effective at close range, which in a lawless galaxy is exactly what you need to defend yourself.
