In Star Wars: Andor, Cassian is taken prisoner and forced to work on Narkina 5. The prisoners have a strict schedule with Tunqstoid steel-powered floors that will shock prisoners if they go off-program. As brutal as this sounds, the Empire’s cruelty in other prisons makes Narkina 5 look like a resort. Here are 5 of the worst Imperial prisons.

Hello, World!

The Spice Mines Of Kessel

Kessel had been a prison since the days of the Republic, but the Empire made things much worse. Many prisoners were worked to death. Because of the planet’s extremely cold climate, miners had to wear environment suits to survive.

Prisoners on Kessel had to mine glitterstim in the dark because of the drug’s photoactive nature while they fended off attacks from energy spiders. The spiders drew their energy from life-forces of living creatures. Blaster bolts were useless on the spiders, making self-defence more complicated. Accidents stemming from the dark environment or the energy spiders led to punctured suits and certain death.

Dathomir Imperial Prison

When the Empire needed a place to discard enemies without causing a spectacle, they sent them to the planet Dathomir with little oversight. Dathomir was the perfect place for the Empire’s problematic prisoners to waste away except for one major complication. The Nightsisters were Dathomir natives who used the planet’s connection to the force for their Magick.

Hello, World!

The Nightsisters clan volunteered to keep the inmates in control but used the Force to warp everyone’s mind, guards included. To solve the problem, the Emperor destroyed all ships on the planet and abandoned inmates and guards alike to the Nightsisters.

Stars’ End

Stars’ End was located on the asteroid Mystus VII. The prison boasted impenetrable defenses. The main tower had strong armor, anti-concussion fields, high-tech communication systems, and an ion cannon. All of these defenses make the prison inescapable, but even without these defenses, the prisoners have no way out. All of the Stars' End inmates were kept in cold storage in stasis booths, turning the prison into a kind of purgatory.

Trasse Proving Grounds

While the inmates in Narkina 5 were forced to help the Empire manufacture technology, the prisoners at the Trasse proving grounds had a worse fate. They were lined up as living crash dummies, so Imperial Walkers could test out new blaster models on the inmates.

The Empire partnered with the Blackscale Clan of Trandoshan slavers to enslave the entire Wookiee population of Kashyyyk. The Wookiee government helped save the Jedi from the Great Jedi purge, so the Empire was eager to punish the species. The Trandoshen slavers were given free rein to take Wookiee families. From the Avatar, Prisoners were sent to work in Imperial Black Sites. However, while the Wookies were in their care, the Trandoshans made it their mission to make the prisoner’s life miserable. They even went as far as to split up families during processing.

Hello, World!

All of these brutal Imperial prisons make Narkina 5 seem like a peaceful getaway with personal cells and access to food and water. Although Narkina 5 was no picnic, Cassian was lucky to avoid these other harsh facilities.
