General Grievous' Life Before 'The Clone Wars'

Fans of the Star Wars universe have become very familiar with the character of General Grievous. He was well known as the general of the Separatist Droid Army in The Clone Wars and Revenge of the Sith. Before that, however, Grievous lived through several other adventures that shaped the character he would later become.
The individual that would later become known as General Grievous was born before the Clone Wars as Qymaen jai Sheelal. He was born on the Wild Space planet of Kalee. From the beginning of his life, Sheelal possessed a fascination with the warlords of Kalee as they returned home with the treasures they had gained from the people they conquered. His father helped train him with an Outland rifle, and by the age of eight, he was responsible for the death of forty of his enemies. He also began to harbor a disdain for the Galactic Republic.

Sheelal quickly rose in rank to become a feared warrior and warlord. He learned battle tactics and warfare during the Kaleesh-Yam’rii war and became one of the legendary military leaders of his people. Because of his bloody reputation among his people and others, he would eventually take on the name of “Grievous.”
After becoming the preeminent warlord of Kalee, Grievous began to turn his attention beyond his home planet. Over the course of years, Grievous would topple nations, slay kings, and murder legends like a Wookiee warrior champion.
The legend of Grievous continued to spread across the galaxy and attracted the attention of the Sith. Count Dooku and Darth Sidious saw great potential in Grievous. The Sith had been recruiting pupils who both had unique skills and hatred of the Jedi, which Grievous was not in short supply of. As time went on, Grievous's hatred of the Jedi grew when he saw how they were nearly unstoppable thanks to their connection with the Force.

Eventually, Grievous would become an agent of the InterGalactic Banking Clan and quickly became one of the Clan’s main enforcers. This only impressed Dooku and Sidious more. The Sith approached Grievous with the offer to turn him into a cyborg. Grievous’ combat abilities grew significantly as he sacrificed most of his physical form in exchange for mechanical parts. Later on, Dooku’s agents would sabotage Grievous’ shuttle, which ended in a near-fatal crash. To save his life, his remaining vital organs were implanted into a new robotic body.
Through his transformation, his brain was altered (although without his knowledge) to make him a smarter and faster fighter. His memory center was altered to suppress memories of his past and increase his aggression. Very little remained of his original body. Only his brain, eyes, and several vital internal organs remained of his original body. His heart, lungs, and digestive system were implanted into a duranium alloy body that included mechanical legs and arms.

As a cyborg, he did not need to eat or drink. He was also immune to poisons and toxins. However, the technology that he possessed was not perfect and actually weakened his heart and lungs. This gave Grievous a persistent cough and difficulty breathing for the rest of his life.
Count Dooku presented Grievous with a lightsaber, and it would eventually become his weapon of choice as he went on his Jedi hunt. He would spend hours watching holovids of Jedi in combat, studying each lightsaber style as just another aspect of warfare to be learned. His cybernetic implants and combat programming helped him analyze and counter his opponents. He would add more lightsabers to his collection as he defeated numerous Jedi during the Clone Wars until his final duel with Obi-Wan Kenobi in Revenge of the Sith.
