Did You Know That John Wayne Had a Part In ‘Star Wars’?
When people think of John Wayne, they think of three things:
Cowboys
Being secretly called Marion
Why the Hell did he think he could play Genghis Khan
Sadly, none of these are made up.
What you may not immediately think of, however, is Star Wars. But you should! Even if just to not have to think about The Conqueror.
RELATED:
It is a little known fact that John Wayne’s last ever film role was as the voice of a fan favourite character Garindan eez Zavor, also known as longsnoot. Turns out his role may have been small – but his impact was quite huge. Garindan is the long-nosed, clicky, hooded spy who calls the Imperials about Luke and the droids’ presence on Tatooine.
“No way is that John Wayne under that hood,” I hear you say!
Well, my friend, you are 100% correct – of course, it isn’t. BUT! It is a sample of Wayne’s voice from stock audio, distorted, treated, and processed to create the unique Kubazi language. As Han Solo, the Cantina, and Star Wars, in general, were all inspired by the early films of John Wayne and his posse, it is fitting that he lives on in this small but pivotal role in A New Hope.
More than just a sneaky, devious minion of the Empire. Garindan is actually an unwilling thrall to the Empire. He came from a good clan and a loving family on his home planet and had been posted - against his will - on this dusty, lifeless, backwater planet. Faced with hostility from the natives and missing his family dearly – he reported this potential terrorist farm boy and his murder bots in order to claim the bounty. Then returned home to his wife and children and eventually freed Kubaz from the plastisteel-sheathed grip of the Empire.
