A Quick Guide To The Outer Rim Territories: Part 1
The Outer Rim Territories is a sparsely populated region of the galaxy. It is the largest region in the galaxy and is home to diverse worlds and rugged primitive frontier planets. Major factions have little control over the Outer Rim, so it’s the perfect place for pirates, smugglers, and slavers. During the era of the Galactic Republic, expansion into the Outer Rim was possible. Major progress in expansion was made during the High Republic era. It later became a major area of conflict during the First Order-Resistance War. There are many planets within the Outer Rim, some we’ve seen, and others we haven’t. Let’s review some of the more popular planets located in the Outer Rim.
Tatooine
This is probably the most recognizable planet in the Outer Rim. This desert planet is part of a binary star system. It orbits two scorching suns, which results in a lack of water on the planet. Many residents of the planet are forced to draw water via moisture farms. It also has little surface vegetation. Its native inhabitants include Jawas and Tusken Raiders.
It is the home of Luke and Anakin Skywalker. Many of the Star Wars stories have taken place on Tatooine.

Mustafar
To quote Hera Syndulla, "I've only heard that name once. From Kanan. He said Mustafar is where Jedi go to die." It is a small planet located inside the Mustafar system within the Atravis sector. It used to be a garden world but is now a planet full of lava.
This is the planet where Obi-Wan and Anakin have their fight at the end of Revenge of the Sith. It is also where Darth Vader built his fortress.
Ryloth
The homeworld of the Twi’lek species is located within the Ryloth system. The planet is covered in jungles, mesas, valleys, and volcanoes. It has an atmosphere that is breathable for Twi’leks and humans. A forest that is filled with dangerous creatures covers its equator. For safety, Twi’leks live in caves underground.
It is home to Hera Syndulla.
Kamino
An aquatic, extragalactic planet located in the Abrin sector, it was largely barren and was covered in oceans that held a variety of aquatic life. It is located just beyond the Outer Rim and just outside the boundaries of the galaxy. The natives of the planets are Kaminoans, a race of tall, elegant beings with long necks. They are a mysterious species that mainly keep to themselves. They live in stilt-like cities throughout the planet. While it was largely isolated and erased from the Jedi temple archives, Master Obi-Wan Kenobi was able to trace bounty hunter Jango Fett back to the planet and discovered the cloning program taking place there.
The major settlements of Kamino ended up being destroyed at the end of The Bad Batch Season 1.
Mandalore
The Mandalorians were fearsome warriors who raided the Jedi temple during the fall of the Old Republic. They were feared throughout the galaxy and had political influence over thousands of star systems. However, years of war led the planet Mandalore to become inhospitable for its residents. The Mandalorians were then forced to live in doomed cities. Duchess Satine Kryze later came in with a pacifist regime and joined the Galactic Republic. During the Night of a Thousand Tears, the planet was heavily bombed. Many Mandalorians were killed, and afterward many Mandalorians were scattered throughout the galaxy believing the planet to be cursed.
Scarif
The remote, tropical planet located in the Abrion sector is a small and idyllic world. Scarif is a deep blue world and was speckled with clouds. Its surface comprises of tropical, volcanic island chains that rose from the clear, shallow oceans. The mantle is filled with dense metals that would be used in starship construction. It also played a big part in the Galactic Empire’s military-industrial complex and became a top-secret research base.
This is where the members of Rogue One went to retrieve the Death Star plans.
Dathomir
Located in the Dathomir system of the Quelli sector, Dathomir was home to Darth Maul, Savage Opress, and Asajj Ventress. Its central star bathed the planet in blood-red light. It also contains numerous continents overrun by vegetation, forests, and swamplands. The dark side of the Force has a strong presence on the planet as well, making it an uninviting world even though it has a comfortable atmosphere. It is home to many dangerous predators and a challenging ecosystem. It was given the nickname of the “rancor planet” as it is the homeworld to the dangerous rancors.
The Outer Rim Territories include many remote planets that we have seen and many we have not. With its remote status, it is easy for people to hide out here away from government control. Many of these planets, however, are difficult to live on. There are places even farther than the Outer Rim that has yet to be explored.
