A Jedi’s Guide To Kyber Crystals

Kyber crystals are an essential part of any lightsaber. During the “youngling” stage of Jedi training, students are sent to the Crystal Cave on Ilum, where they must overcome something specific to them in order to get their crystal. There are various colors of kyber crystals, and each color has a specific meaning.
Kyber crystals go back way before the Jedi; in fact, they were worshipped by different societies before the Jedi came into the picture. The crystals have always been quite powerful, even before they were used in lightsabers. When the Jedi came into contact with the crystals, they became a part of Jedi culture immediately. While some societies questioned their moral standing, the Jedi wanted to use the crystals for good. The Sith eventually tried to use kyber crystals for their weapons of mass destruction, one of the most notable instances of which was, of course, the Death Star.

A kyber crystal powers each lightsaber. The crystal has a certain color, which becomes the color the blade emits. The two most popular colors are blue and green. Blue is said to represent righteousness and bravery, mostly due to its association with the Jedi Order and the user's strong spiritual alignment with the crystal. Green stands for harmony, helpfulness, cooperation, spirituality, and demonstrable good will. The green lightsaber tends to be used by wiser and senior Jedi, such as Yoda, Yaddle, Qui-Gon Jinn, and Luke Skywalker.

The purple lightsaber is most recognizable in the hands of Jedi Master Mace Windu. This lightsaber does not have any canon meaning behind it, besides the fact it was specifically requested by Samuel L Jackson himself, due to his favorite color being purple. In Legends, however, it represents moral ambiguity, uncertainty, and reconstruction. It also represents its user's affinity for both the dark and light sides of the Force.
Yellow lightsabers are much less common. They are used by the Jedi Temple guards, who carry double-bladed yellow lightsabers. There is not much known about this color; it could’ve been made intentionally to differentiate the guards. Asajj Ventress and Ahsoka Tano have both wielded a yellow lightsaber at some point. The most recent character, however, to wield a yellow lightsaber is that of Rey Skywalker. In Legends, the yellow color came after a red crystal was purified.

White lightsabers are most notably associated with that Ahsoka Tano. In the Ahsoka novel, she took the lightsaber of the Sixth Brother, who was an Inquisitor. Since his blade was red, she was able to purify the crystal, turning it white. This also showed her mastery of the Force.
Red lightsabers are most recognizably used by the Sith. While the Jedi share a bond with their crystal, the Sith are not able to achieve that same bond. They steal their crystals and make them bleed, pouring all their hate, fear, and other negative emotions into the object. Thus, the red color is born. However, orange is another color that could be associated with the villains of Star Wars; while not specifically identified as Sith, we see Baylan Skoll and Shin Hati wielding orange lightsabers in the Ahsoka trailer. While the purple blade shows its user is familiar with both the light and the dark side of the Force, the orange lightsaber could be similar, and that its wielder doesn’t align completely with the Sith.

Lightsabers are a complicated weapon. There are many components, but the most important one is the kyber crystal. The crystal changes color based on the wielder and the path they choose. Kyber crystals have a long history and have become an essential part of Jedi culture.
