Why 'Star Wars: The Old Republic' Is Such A Unique Star Wars Experience

There have been multiple large-scale Star Wars video games throughout the years, but, there is an objectively lesser-known game that has been living in its own corner of the Star Wars universe for years. It’s had a few rocky moments, but overall, Star Wars: The Old Republic, or SWTOR, has been a story-rich mass multiplayer role-playing game that has been keeping Star Wars fans entertained since 2011. It offers fantastic storytelling, in-depth character creation, Jedi and Sith training, and the chance to make choices that affect the outcome of your character's life. You get to visit familiar planets in a time far before what we see in the media today. The game is always doing what it can to keep players entwined in the character development, new stories, and new characters. It also has produced some of the most stunning video game trailers I have personally seen, as well.

Star Wars: The Old Republic, as mentioned, has quite a lot of story to it. You begin by building your character, choosing your class-specific storyline (for example Sith Assassin, Imperial Spy, Jedi Knight, etc.), and designing your physical appearance. There are hundreds of options and plenty of beloved Star Wars species’ to choose from. From there, your story is broken up into 3 long chapters. The first chapter introduces your character's class, lays down the details of your story, and gets you through the first section of beginner planets. From there, you can continue to make the hard choices required of the various character stories. You can also make use of the hundreds of side missions to get yourself leveled up. There are also countless space battles, massive bosses, collectibles, and other things that typically make an MMO like Star Wars: The Old Republic feels like a complete game. But, as I said, the game is STILL going strong.

To add to the hours and hours of story, there are also exciting DLCs available to players, too. The most notable is the story of Revan, but my favorite is the two-part DLC regarding the Knights of the Fallen Empire and the Knights of the Eternal Throne. Both DLCs are connected and they flow perfectly to complete the story in the end and take you through new challenges not previously explored in the game. Shadow of Revan is a section that holds quite a bit of overall meaning in the Star Wars universe. There was a rumor that the cult leading force user would be making their debut on Disney+, but there is no news of when. Revan’s story is massive in the original Knights of the Old Republic game (which has previously come back to the Switch) as the main antagonist. Star Wars: The Old Republic most recently celebrated its 10th anniversary with another DLC that focuses on the main antagonist across the entire game, Darth Malgus. This marks a total of 8 expansions for players to explore after completing their main class storylines. The game continues to prove that they have enough content to keep you busy for years.

Star Wars: The Old Republic stands up to the test of time by keeping players engaged. There have been over 40 different video games based in the Star Wars universe and while we continue to make more, SWTOR remains at the top of the list for the most expansive in the universe for myself. The ability to create your character, make your choices, and face off against new foes is something that MMOs usually drive to give their players and SWTOR does it very well.

The fanbase is quite loyal to the game the same way it’s loyal to the Star Wars franchise in general. Some of the people you find in the game can end up being a large part of your life, much like any other similar game. The community that SWTOR has created is accepting and helpful. One of my favorite memories from my time playing the game was shortly after Carrie Fisher's death. Thousands of players gathered on Alderaan in game to pay her tribute in the halls of House Organa. That was a moment I will never forget. It’s moments like these that support the title of this article. Star Wars: The Old Republic offers fans an in-depth, unique, and rich story-based game that brings hours and hours of deep storytelling outside of the main plots of the Star Wars universe.
