Why 'Moon Knight' Is The Best MCU Show

Phase 4 of the MCU has been one of the best, in my opinion. We have gotten many new shows and movies with many new characters. This phase has also had more diversity and a wider range of stories told. One of the best series from Phase 4 is Moon Knight. It was such a different show from what we have seen in the past, that it is easily one of the best MCU shows that’s out there.

Moon Knight begins with Steven Grant, a museum gift shop employee who lives a pretty simple, mundane life. He has become plagued with blackouts and gets into dicey situations. It is not until he discovers the identity of a mercenary named Marc Spector who looks exactly like him that he finds out he has Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID).

The show’s villain Arthur Harrow wants to bring back the goddess Amit so those who are bad can be killed before they cause harm to anyone. Marc and Steven are thrust then into Egypt, where they must team up and use the powers gifted to them by the Egyptian moon god Konshu.

Moon Knight is my favorite for many reasons. Oscar Isaac was phenomenal in it, and the visuals were stunning. I love that it was the first Marvel show with a new character we have never met before, and it was so different from any other show or movie within the MCU that we have seen. The show also dealt with some heavy topics. You find out that Marc created the alter of Steven so he would not have to live with his memories of his mother’s abuse. It helped him cope with what he had been through. When Marc got to the Field of Reeds, he realized that he was not complete and went back for Steven.

In the comics, Marc had two alters—Steven and Jake. We saw Steven the entire season, but not a glimpse of Jake. There were hints of him throughout, but we did not get to see him until the post-credits scene of the season finale. This particular cliffhanger was why we deserve a second season of this underrated show.

I appreciate the fact that the show incorporated a lot of Egyptian mythology. The only other Marvel entity that dealt with a different afterlife was Black Panther. I love getting to see different cultures and views represented, especially in such a big franchise like Marvel. They also approached the topic of DID very well. I wasn’t too familiar with the condition before the show, so it was informative to see it portrayed. They also explored the character’s Jewish faith, which was interesting, but they could have done more with it.

Layla was a new character created for the show, and she was equally amazing. With her background as an explorer like her father, she used those abilities to help Steven/Marc with their task. She faced Harrow alone and was able to bring back Marc after he was shot. Her becoming the hero Scarlet Scarab was one of my top MCU moments.

My one issue with the show is that it was too short. Six episodes were not enough for this great show. Moon Knight deserved more praise than it got. This show was completely different than all the others that have been released. Disney did an excellent job of introducing a new character to the MCU and having many people fall in love with Marc/Steven. There are rumors of Season 2, but nothing has been confirmed yet. As a huge Moon Knight fan, I truly hope we get a second, especially after how the first season ended. I hope we see more of Moon Knight whether in a second season or in a larger Marvel project. This is the best Marvel show and is vastly underrated.
