Why Donald Glover Needs To Be In The ‘Lando’ Series

A lot was made about Star Wars: Lando when it was first officially announced in December 2020. However, things have gone radio silent since then on the proposed Disney+ Show. The only recent news was Kathleen Kennedy stating there was “no movement on the show.” Not exactly inspiring words, but no news is good news…right? Donald Glover, re-caped, swaggering, and smirking might be the shot in the arm the Star Wars Galaxy needs right now…and here are some reasons why!
He Is Donald Glover!

This needs very little further explanation, frankly. As a person, Glover has charisma, presence, and likability. As an actor, Glover has range, nuance, swagger…and more charm, presence, and likability. Any lead actor in a series has to be a strong personality - Glover has this in spades and would be a strong tentpole for the Disney banner.

Lando Calrissian is a deep and complex character throughout the original trilogy, Extended Universe, and Legends Universe. One who has multiple character arcs. To play this convincingly, you need an actor with a suitably wide range. From Community to Atlanta, Glover has proven he can play Comedy, Drama, Romance, and…well, everything. Childish Gambino was its own unique genre!
Solo Was A Bit Of A Damp Squib
Regardless of your opinion of Solo: A Star Wars Story, Glover as Lando was one of the highlights. He played a convincingly younger version of the character we see Billy Dee Williams play in the 80s while also putting his own mannerisms and personality into the young scoundrel. We need more of this!
We Need More People Of Colour In Leading Roles

While Andor and The Mandalorian have brought us some fantastic lead actors of Latino origin, we have yet to see a Star Wars property with a young Black lead. Of course, there have been some tremendous Black characters in Star Wars such as Finn, Mace Windu, and original-flavour Lando – the numbers are historically a bit white-washed – for several reasons too deep to get into in a fun article gushing over Donald Glover!
Glover Holds All The Sabacc Cards

In a rare turn of fate, Disney hasn’t moved forward with this property because they are very much waiting on Donald Glover himself. This suggests that Glover will have a reasonable amount of power in creating the Lando series. His track record as a writer and producer would suggest this is a VERY positive sign.
Star Wars Needs To Be Fun Again

Everything is cyclical in Hollywood, and the Star Wars series is no exception. We are currently in a time segment where everything is a bit gritty and grimy. Mando is facing expulsion from his creed, Obi-Wan battled Darth Vader AND Depression/PTSD, and Andor is eking an existence under the newly polished Jackboots of the Empire. Many of these have been phenomenal and told great stories. Maybe there is room in the Universe, as the real world becomes bleaker, for a swashbuckling rogue having some space adventures with Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Not even the Robot, just Phoebe Waller-Bridge – she’s an HRD now…call me Disney.
