Where Can The 'Guardians Of The Galaxy' Franchise Go From Here?
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has been released and is the final installment in the current Guardians saga. We have seen these characters grow throughout not only their movies but also in the Avengers movies as well. This film was the final one with this group of Guardians, as both Zoe Saldana (Gamora) and Dave Bautista (Drax) have confirmed that they are done playing their characters. This was also the final Guardians film directed by James Gunn. However, this doesn’t mean another Guardians film won’t happen. This era of Guardians may be over, so let's see where the franchise can go from here.
The first, and most obvious idea, is based on the post-credits scene from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. It features Rocket, who is now the leader of the group, and Groot. It also adds the addition of Adam Warlock, Kraglin, Cosmo, and Phyla, who will likely be the MCU’s take on Phyla-Vell. Together they are a powerful team, but may not be enough to lead their own movie. This new group will most likely show up in future Avengers movies, which will wrap up the multiverse saga.

Another idea is not to include any of the familiar characters at all. Guardians 3000 is about the original Guardians Of The Galaxy. The group features Vance Astro, Yondu, Martinex, Starhawk, and Charlie-27. They must fight to save the 31st century from the Badoon. While this would be an interesting direction for the next Guardians film, it wouldn’t be too crazy considering the MCU is currently in its multiverse phase. While Rocket and his new team were the ones introduced, there can always be more Guardians, especially if they have to team up and fight Kang in the end.
Even though Drax will not be coming back, adapting Guardians Of The Galaxy: New Guard-Emperor Quill could happen, or at least ideas could be pulled from it. It has Rocket leading the Guardians after Peter Quill has to adjust to being the leader of the Spartax Empire. While we know Peter left to go back to Earth, we will be seeing him again. This could also introduce X-Men’s Kitty Pryde and Ben Grimm “The Thing” From the Fantastic Four to the group. This would be one of the crazier ideas but would make for an interesting combination of characters. It would also enable fans to see Rocket as the leader of the Guardians as well.
While not a full-fledged Guardians team, there could eventually be a movie or a series about Star-Lord. The end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 informed us that “Star-Lord Will Return”. There are plenty of Star-Lord solo comics the MCU could draw on, and would explore more of just Star-Lord and various others he encounters on his adventures. Star-Lord: Grounded would be a good place to start. Peter and the rest of the Guardians are stranded on terra firma, so he looks for work. At the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Peter leaves Knowhere to return to Earth. This comic would tie in nicely to how the third volume ended.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was the perfect ending to this saga. We won’t ever see this team again, but will probably see various members either together or separately, doing their own thing in future content. While this era has ended, there are plenty of stories the MCU can always pull from, but whatever they decide to do, there won’t be a group like this one ever again.
