What Do We Know About Dave Filoni's 'Mandalorian' Movie Announced at Celebration?

When Kathleen Kennedy announced a roster of new Star Wars shows at Disney's Investor Day in December 2020, she also teased a "story climax" that would bring together the stories of The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, and Rangers of the New Republic (which has since been canceled). Back then, it seemed like this conclusion would either be part of one of these shows or arrive as an event movie on Disney+.

At the recent Star Wars Celebration in London however, Lucasfilm revealed that this "climax" will come in the form of a feature film, and the big screen directing debut of Dave Filoni. Naturally, the company didn't provide many details about this project, which is very likely still several years away, other than it will conclude the narratives of The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, and The Book of Boba Fett (which was still unannounced back in 2020). As the upcoming Skelton Crew also takes place in this timeline (several years after the events of Episode VI), it is possible that this show's characters could also appear in this movie.

Given the trailer for Ahsoka, which also premiered at Star Wars Celebration, it seems all but certain that Grand Admiral Thrawn (played by Lars Mikkelsen), whom Ashoka explicitly called "heir to the Empire" will be the main antagonist of the show. His ultimate goal will be to reunite the fractured remnants of the old regime with the rising First Order, all of whom hid from the fragile New Republic in the Unknown Regions.

Though an official casting announcement is still some time away, Pedro Pascal will very likely reprise his role as Din Djarin, as will Rosario Dawson as Ahsoka Tano and Temura Morrison as Boba Fett. Other potential characters are Bo Katan and her newly reunited Mandalorians, who would seriously threaten Thrawn, Hera Syndulla as a general of the New Republic, Sabine Wren, and the (hopefully) found Jedi Ezra Bridger. And of course, there has to be Grogu.

The main challenge that Dave Filoni and his creative crew will face is to make the movie appeal to casual Star Wars fans, who haven't watched every show on Disney+ and probably think that Boba Fett is still inside the Sarlacc. On the other hand, the film also has to integrate with the narrative of the Sequel Trilogy, so there can't be a big-scale war, and the existence of the First Order has to stay a secret to not contradict the events of The Force Awakens.

As the stories that will culminate in Filoni's film are still evolving, the movie is likely still years away. Jon Favreau has already written the scripts for season 4 of The Mandalorian. There are whispers about a possible season 2 for Ahsoka, so the December 2027 spot that Lucasfilm reserved a few years back seems the same earliest time when the movie could hit cinemas.

Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy's film about a new Jedi Order, starring Daisy Ridley as Rey, will be the next Star Wars film on the big screens, hitting theatres in December 2025.
