This Is What The New ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ Film Could Be About
Avatar: The Last Airbender is scheduled to drop by the newly formed Avatar Studios on October 10, 2025. The movie will follow Team Avatar as young adults; however, it’s still up in the air as to what the film will be about. Nevertheless, diving into all the news about the new film could provide some clues.
In the past year, it’s been revealed that Avatar Studios will release three films. Each will be a standalone story, and together they will not make a trilogy. Reports have pointed to the first film as a Kyoshi-centric story, but per Avatar News, they now speculate that the first film will be Zuko-centered. News of a Zuko story led to speculation that it could be based on the comic continuation from the show that focused on the search for Zuko’s mother. However, current reports about the first film state that it will be an entirely original story, not an adaptation. So that effectively rules out stories like The Search.

However, the clue that this will be during the time when the Gaang are young adults sheds more light on the story. In the timeline, after the show’s end, Aang and the others have quite a task on hand. First, they must figure out how to repair the world from a devastating 100-year war. During this time, Zuko and the rest head out to find his mother, and Aang has to work with Zuko to figure out what to do with Fire Nation colonies that had been established on Earth Kingdom land. The war lasted so long that many who live there know nothing else aside from the blending of Earth Kingdom and Fire Nation cultures. So together, they decided to establish a new nation, one centered around a capital city that would celebrate all cultures, and they called it the Republic of Nations, with the capital getting named Republic City.
This new city and nation would be governed by all four nations through a council. It was technologically advanced due to Fire Nation occupation and technological progress. It would have its own navy and army, and by the time of Avatar Korra, 70 years after the war Avatar Aang finished, it was a bustling modern metropolis. In The Legend of Korra, several flashbacks depict the city’s and the republic’s early years and feature young adult Aang and friends.
During the years after the war, Zuko had a challenging time bringing the Fire Nation from a century-long war-time stance to one of peace. There were rivals for power, like his sister, and those loyal to his father, Ozai, did not think the Fire Nation should abandon the war. So when he went to search for his mother, he left his uncle Iroh in charge, and when he came back, the task of running a nation with its issues was a lot for a young teenager.
All this can come together for a great story for the first addition to the Avatar film franchise in years. If the information about it potentially being a Zuko-focused story pans out, and knowing that it’s at a time when Aang and the Gaang are young adults, then it’s likely that the film could focus on the early years of Republic City and Zuko’s monumental task of transitioning the Fire Nation from a warring nation to a beacon of peace. Perhaps it could focus on the Fire Nation’s responsibility for the war and how much of a role it should play in establishing the new nation.
