This Is What It Would Be Like Fighting With The Partisan Alliance In ‘Star Wars’

Andor has done a solid job of highlighting the inner workings of fascism and how hard it is to organize resistance among various groups with the same end game, but the means are different. This was never more highlighted than when Luthen went to visit with Saw Gerrera, and Saw named off a list of rebel groups and a singular word to describe them, all to point out they aren’t united.
One of the groups mentioned was Saw’s own Partisan Alliance. It was a little weird to say they are “lost,” given he’s their leader. So what would it be like to be a part of the Partisan Alliance? Let’s dig into it.

The word chaos comes to mind thinking about the Partisan Alliance. If you’ve read about the Nihil from the High Republic initiative from Lucasfilm Publishing, you might have some indication of what the Partisan Alliance is like. Aside from having a central, influential leader like Saw, it’s an inherently distrustful organization. Saw employees a strange creature that attaches its tentacles to your head and can read your thoughts.
Though how Saw learns of those thoughts from the beast is left unmentioned, given Saw’s erratic state in Rogue One, perhaps the Bor Gullet is like a computer, and he has to attach himself to it as well to get fed the thoughts it reads from another. If you have to use a method like this to vet a recruit, it sounds like Saw’s organization has a deeply suspicious nature. It’s not surprising, given the Empire’s use of spies, but it’s not a healthy foundation for a rebel group.

Saw is a cold leader, indifferent to the loss of life, both on his end and those his fighters end up killing. With the comments made by Mon Mothma to Jyn Erso in Rogue One, Mon distrusts Saw because of his aggressive and reckless tactics. A great example of this is the Inusagi issue. Saw and his Partisans were invited there to infiltrate a festival. The weapons they use cause a lot of collateral damage. The carnage and indifference to the damage they caused forced a lot of Saw’s Partisans to leave and join other rebel cells.
Partisans needed to steel themselves to moral nuance. If you were a part of the Empire, you were fair game. Like Moff Panaka on Naboo. So Saw and his Partisans placed a bomb in the chalet of Moff Panaka. It exploded, killing him, destroying the building, and nearly killing Princess Leia. While Panaka was a Moff of the Empire over Naboo, he was the former head of security for Queen Amidala, and his death angered Bail, who thought Panaka was neither cruel nor corrupt, a rarity in the Empire. He was also angry because it almost killed his daughter.
So, if an eager resident of the galaxy was tired of the Empire and wanted to join the fight against them, and they had a penchant for reckless endangerment, ruthless fighting, and a hatred of all things Empire, then the Partisans and Saw Gerrera would be the best match.
