Simon Whistler 2: Electric Boogaloo

I wrote an article about Simon Whistler, one of my favourite YouTubers, last year. The article described all of the channels he hosted/presented on and the antics he gets into on them. A few changes have since occurred.

Part One: The Channels

RELATED:

Science Unbound

The first and smallest one is that the channel The Science of Science Fiction is now known as Science Unbound.

Other than that, the channel’s description is the same. Whistler uses it to explore specific concepts and general tropes found in science fiction and then assesses their viability against actual science. Whistler’s presentation in these videos is among his more formal ones.

Astrographics

Another intriguing addition to Whistler’s repertoire is the Astrographics channel, a unique exploration of the geography of outer space. This channel fills a niche previously occupied by one of Whistler's other channels, Geographics. The channel’s first video, titled Neutron Stars are More Ridiculous Than You Think, was first posted in late 2023 and has so far received approximately 763,000 views. This is also the channel’s most popular video to date.

Places
The Places channel takes the place of the Geographics channel formerly presented by Whistler. This channel is more in-depth than Geographics, and Whistler seems to take a more serious tack and in-depth look at the places it profiles. The channel’s first video was titled The Yellowstone Supervolcano: Just How Bad Would An Eruption Be?. It’s most popular video to date is Diego Garcia: The Most Controversial Island in the World, exploring the history of the controversial military base in the Indian Ocean, with a total of approximately 865,000 views.

Part Two: The Memes

Brain Blaze- the memes

Thanks to Whistler’s more animated, casual, and excitable style on the Brain Blaze channel, a number of memes have been generated. They include:

ALLEGEDLY!- Simon’s overdramatic use of the word is meant to both cover himself when saying things that are potentially libel or slander, but the drama is used to indicate Whistler’s understanding of how ridiculous it all is.

AM I RIGHT PETER?!- this one I don’t get. Personally, I think it’s the skull on the shelf in the background, but I could be wrong.

In addition, one user on X (formerly Twitter) has posited the theory that Whistler figured out during a tangent that if a million people watched his videos, there would be a whole bunch of Peters watching and it would be fun to spook them by calling them out.

OBLIGATORY DONALD TRUMP JOKE- because these jokes seem necessary.

THE WRITERS IN THE BASEMENT- Simon likes to joke that his writers are slaves he keeps locked up in a basement that barely get any sunlight. These are mainly aimed at Danny Salter. Danny totally plays into the whole thing on his Twitter account. Things really took off when an unknown follower created the #FreeDanny hashtag.

- And many more meme-able moments.

 Part Three: Beyond The Channels

The r/SimonWhistler Subreddit

Beyond the channels, there is also the r/SimonWhistler subreddit. Simon Whistler himself is one of the moderators. Here, members of the subreddit/Simon Whistler fans can talk to each other about the videos they enjoyed, ask questions about random bits they remember from past videos, make topic suggestions for future videos, share memes and jokes, and more. In the past week, topics discussed have included Simon’s impressive beard, his insane level of chutzpah when it comes to controversial topics, references to killers previously featured on his channel, The Casual Criminalist, and how Simon manages to maintain such an insane rate of uploads.

SimonWhistler.com

Simon’s website. Here, interested parties can find out more about Simon, the channels he currently hosts and the ones he formerly hosted, apply for jobs within Simon’s great production machine, learn more about Simon’s commercial partners, and explore some quality merch.

Ultimately, whatever format you choose in which to take in Simon Whistler’s content, it’s never boring, and it always keeps you coming back for more.

Also, Simon, if you’re reading this, Danny says that the basement is getting crowded and they need more mushroom soup.
