Sibling Theory Confirmed In 'Guardians Of The Galaxy Holiday Special'
WARNING: Spoilers Ahead
The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special was released in November with overwhelmingly positive reviews. The short Christmas film confirmed a popular fan theory. After the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, fans were quick to latch onto an easter egg with Ego and a character from Mantis’s species.
In the film, the Guardians meet Mantis, an empath with the power to sense and alter emotions. She serves as Ego’s assistant using her powers to help him sleep. Mantis bonds with the Guardians and reveals Ego’s true nature. As Ego explains his story to Peter, an image of Ego with a host of females including a female of Mantis’ species flashes across the screen. This led many fans to assume that Mantis was Ego’s daughter and. therefore, Peter Quill’s sister. At the time, the director James Gunn dismissed the easter egg. He confirmed that the person was the same species as Mantis but denied that there was anything more to the scene.

Now, flash forward to 2022’s Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. The short film opens with a flashback to Peter’s youth and a Christmas ruined by Yondu. Not understanding the Earth tradition, Yondu throws out the Christmas tree and presents. After hearing the story, Mantis tells Drax that she wants to give Peter a special Christmas to make up for the ruined holiday because of her secret. Mantis reveals that she and Peter are siblings. Together, Mantis and Drax hatch a plan to give Peter his hero, Kevin Bacon, as a Christmas gift. What follows is a hilarious adventure with the pair heading to Hollywood on a quest to bring Kevin Bacon to the planet Knowhere and save Peter Quill’s Christmas. Peter Quill reveals after the events that Yondu had a change of heart and gives Peter a pair of Quad Blasters.
Fans were vindicated when the popular fan theory of Peter and Mantis being siblings was confirmed in a special available only on Disney+. Did James Gunn know about his relationship when he dismissed the easter egg? Will Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 treat this as a big reveal or gloss over it because of the holiday special? The actress who plays Mantis, Pom Klementieff, revealed that she had known the secret since filming the second movie. The secret was supposed to be revealed in Vol. 2, but Gunn decided to keep it a secret for the time being. Why it was released as a side story and not one of the main films is a mystery. But, by the end of the holiday special, Peter and the rest of the Guardians know the secret as well. It appears that back in 2018, James Gunn was being cheeky in dismissing the easter egg. With the secret out in the open, Gunn commented that Mantis made her full-fledged debut in the MCU. With Mantis’ reveal, she and Peter can form a sibling bond and leave Ego in the past where he belongs.
Fans will have to wait until the trilogy’s finale to learn the rest of the team’s secret. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. is scheduled to release on May 5, 2023. Although one fan theory is confirmed, viewers still have a few months to make their best guesses. Will Mantis and Peter bond as siblings? Will Peter recover from his loss of Gamora? What will Groot look like this time? The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special and the previous two films in the trilogy are currently available to stream on Disney+.
