Opinion: Should Luke Skywalker Have His Own Series?

As we live and bask in the golden glow that is the current Star Wars universe, we have the continuing saga of Cassian Andor on Andor, the animated return of Ahsoka and Count Dooku in Tales of the Jedi, Season 3 of The Mandalorian and the live-action return of Ahsoka in Ahsoka. Fans are satisfied, but we still want more, as always. With no word from Disney in recent weeks and months on the movie front, it seems they are going to stay the course with the successful television and streaming service.

But where do we go next? What do fans want to see more? With the success of Obi-Wan Kenobi and brief appearances in The Mandalorian season finale and The Book of Boba Fett, we should focus on Luke Skywalker. With the exception of the prequel trilogy, Luke Skywalker has been the focal point for all the movies since A New Hope. I mean, it is called the Skywalker Saga. He single-handedly was responsible for bringing down the first Death Sar, destroying the Emperor AND Darth Vader, and then making his nephew Kylo Ren look like a fool, setting the First Order back at least for a little bit. However, is it wise to bring us back to Luke for his own television series? I don’t think so, not at this time.

For all that Luke brought to the stories, he really is a one-dimensional character. In those early days of A New Hope, Luke was a whiny kid who seemed to think only of himself. In The Empire Strikes Back, we see an improvement in his character, but he still was headstrong and played loose with his training. This ultimately led to the loss of his hand. In Return of the Jedi, while he did seem to improve his skills, I found the character was still a little flat. Sure, in the world of Star Wars, he is held as some mystic man with ancient powers, and the mention of his name could instill fear in people. Still, I truly believe this storyline needs to go.

Now before I go closing the door completely on a Luke Skywalker series, there are lots of things we could discuss. For example, we can look into his new Jedi temple, which was teased in The Book of Boba Fett, and its ultimate demise, as discussed in the sequel trilogy. While the premise is interesting, we know what the end game is for that series, so we do not need to go into detail on the matter. In addition, it would be rife with characters that we would then spend years arguing about whether they are canon, where they went after Kylo Ren’s purge, or whether they are dead or alive. We could go back and discuss Luke’s exile on Ahch-To and how he learned to commune with the Force and dealt with his pain. On the flip side, I doubt watching sulk about milking Thala-sirens, and having monologues could maintain the interest of even die-hard fans. I would be okay if Disney+ wanted to do a series of animated shorts with a runtime of 10 minutes each, but a series would not do it for me.

There are a lot of other untapped aspects of the Star Wars universe we need to address before we go back to the saga characters like Luke Skywalker. Since the beginning of their own streaming platform, Disney has shown that they are truly successful with their series. However, with The Mandalorian and Andor, we have seen that the audience prefers to leave the Skywalker Saga and take detours to other parts of the universe. At this time, we need to focus on these untapped aspects of the Star Wars universe. Luke Skywalker will always have a special place in our hearts, but it is time to move on. Even discussions about future Star Wars movies do not seem to follow the path of the Skywalker Saga anymore, and we are all better for it.
