Star Wars: Andor has been taking fans for a ride as they learn how Cassian Andor joined the Rebel cause, but the show also focuses on other important characters. One of these characters is Senator Mon Mothma. Genevieve O’Reilly reveals details about her character in an interview with Decider.

The first time O’Reilly played the character was in 2005’s Revenge of the Sith. The actress mentioned playing in lovely little scenes but is grateful for the chance to explore the character in depth. Now, so many years later, the Senator finds herself as part of a rebellion while keeping on a facade to avoid trouble with the Empire. She deals with the unique situation of being married to someone who fully supports the Empire and makes his living from them.

O’Reilly’s Mon Mothma is allied to Stellan Skarsgård’s Luthen Rael, the man responsible for bringing Andor aboard. In the fourth episode, Luthen and Mon Mothma have a scene together filled with subtext about the rebellion. When asked if she felt like she was playing multiple characters, O’Reilly called the scene wonderful with each character choosing their words carefully in public. Then, they retreat to the back room and can be honest with each other about their struggles and the cost of rebellion. While Star Wars is known for epic battles with lightsabers, spaceships, and blasters, this scene in Andor reveals more of the on-the-ground rebellion. There’s less spectacle but no less danger.

In the series, Mon Mothma lives in a beautiful marble house with her husband and daughter, a change from the usual Star Wars trope of people on the run. O’Reilly revealed that the house set and all the Andor sets are built. The series shows a bonsai tree in the house, but O’Reilly says there’s also an inverted bonsai tree coming from the roof. The actress said she would love to live in that house.

The final aspect of the interview focused on Mon Mothma’s fashion sense. As a Senator, she has money to spend on appearance and a need to appear sophisticated. O’Reilly concludes the interview with a comment about exploring Mon Mothma at a different time and posits that we may all be “different versions of ourselves at different times in our lives.” Viewers can watch the Senator’s adventures in Star Wars: Andor on Disney+.
