If there is one solid theme running through Star Wars, it is politics and the people on all sides, whether it be for the Empire or the Rebellion. With Disney Plus’ most recent releases, Andor and Obi-Wan Kenobi, we are able to see more backstories for characters that were vital to the Rebellion. One thing both of these shows provide is a view into the lives of the young daughters of Senators Mon Mothma of Chandrila and Bail and Queen Breha Organa of Alderaan. Let’s take a look at the lives of these political “princesses.”

Leida Mothma, daughter of Mon Mothma and Perrin Fertha, is a typical teenager trying to find her way in a world of constant division, which includes her parents. Growing up at the beginning of the Galactic Civil War, Leida felt neglected by her mother and looked to her father for guidance and support to the point where she began to resent her mother and her career. She tends to favor her Chandrilan upbringing and customs.

While not much is known about Leida outside of Andor, she makes an appearance in 1993’s Dark Empire Sourcebook as Lieda. In the book, it is mentioned that she grew up on Chandrila, but had to flee once her mother’s involvement with the Rebellion became public. While she did not exactly follow in her mother’s footsteps, she did stay by her mother’s side to help restore peace to what was left of the Imperial Remnant.

On the other hand, we have Princess Leia Organa. The daughter of Anakin Skywalker and the former-queen-turned-senator of Naboo Padmé Amidala. After her father turned to the dark side and her mother sadly died immediately after giving birth to her and her twin brother Luke, Leia was adopted by Senator Bail and Queen Breha of Alderaan

As a child, Leia was raised to be a princess, but she also insisted on learning to do things herself as much as possible so that she would not end up helpless. She was also adamant that she would not become a senator. However, as she got older, Leia became a senator’s aide to her father, and then a junior senator to Alderaan. After the Empire’s destruction of Alderaan, Leia became heavily involved with the Rebellion. She would lead the Rebellion and then the Resistance as a general until her death.

Both Leia and Leida were born into politics and were resistant to following in their parent's footsteps during their youth. One chose the path of her parents and became the face of the Rebellion while the other stood by her mother. While we know Leia’s full and complete path, Leida’s is still relatively unwritten. Only time will tell what will happen as she gets older. Hopefully, someone will put pen to paper and give her a story that will mirror the strong female characters known across the Star Wars universe. Given Leia’s upbringing and political path later in life, she makes the perfect candidate for “Princess of Politics.”
