How ‘Star Wars’ Could Move On From The Skywalkers, Like Marvel Moved Away From Superheroes
I know what you’re thinking. When did Marvel move away from superheroes? Aren’t we on Phase 18 of the Marvel Extended Cinematic, TV, and Game Universe just now?
Well, yes and no. Marvel realized they could not just keep making “superhero” films, so they started making genre films that happened to feature superheroes in them. Captain America: The Winter Soldier was a spy thriller. Guardians of the Galaxy was a Space Opera. Ant-Man was an exposé on Paul Rudd’s agelessness, etc.
The Star Wars universe is rife for this type of expansion, and frankly, a lot of people are DONE with the Skywalkers and their family strife. So here are some starting points that someone more talented and smarter than me could build on to explore the quite literal unknown regions of the Star Wars universe.
Horror
If you think about it too closely, a lot of the Star Wars Universe is truly terrifying. Unknown beasts, unexplored planets, and who knows what else beyond the fringes of known space.
One area that is really rife for a grounded, yet horror-filled story, is what the Empire has been up to in their secret laboratories a la the criminally underrated Legends novel Death Troopers.

Adventure
The comparisons between Han Solo and Indiana Jones have been done to death, but the rise characters like Doctor Aphra could absolutely slip into a planet-spanning, tomb raiding, empire-avoiding search of the mystical McGuffin that definitely belongs in a museum. Also, our loveable rogue would quite like the money too…
Espionage
We get hints of this in the original trilogy and Rogue One, but wouldn’t it be cool seeing a proper high-stake heist or these sneaky Bothan’s undertaking clandestine adventures deep behind enemy lines? Crix Madine was known for being an expert covert operative – so show us Disney! Space James Bond!
War
War is, oddly enough, a big part of Star Wars, and we have some tremendous arcs in The Clone Wars that follow troops on the front line. However, one of the best things about Solo was actually seeing troops that were boots on the ground, covered in mud with no idea what is going on. It was a far cry from the clean crisp uniforms on a capital ship. There is real potential for a gripping human (or clone) story in a Saving Private Ryan-style journey.
Noir
This one is a no-brainer. Give us a grizzled detective, a seedy underworld, corrupt security forces, a sexy femme fatale, and a smoky mystery to unravel that goes all the way to the top.
Death Sticks at the ready.
Buddy Comedy
We’ve had elements of this throughout numerous Star Wars media, but I would like to see some properly fleshed out characters take the starring role in a film and have misadventures across the space-lanes. Think The Blues Brothers or Dumb and Dumber…in a spaceship.
Rom-Com
Need I say more? Do it, you absolute cowards.
Sports
WHY HAVE WE NEVER HAD A FILM FEATURING A PLUCKY UNDERDOG FROM MALASTARE WIN A CUP. The best part of The Phantom Menace, and an exceptional N64 game needs a heart-warming tale on the big screen.
Family/ Feel Good
For better or worse, family is at the heart of so much of the Star Wars universe and gave us some of the best story arcs and reveals.
Let us see a family moving to escape the empire and having some feel-good bonding as they move to a better life.
Crime/Gangster
Just make The Godfather in space.
We already have multiple crime families set up and ready to go. Coruscant’s underbelly is ready for a turf war.
