How Richard Dillane’s Davo Sculdun In 'Star Wars: Andor' Is A Great Depiction Of Wealth And Privilege
In the most recent episode of Andor, “One Way Out,” Andy Serkis’s character Kino Loy finally teams up with Cassian Andor in the much-awaited prison break. We see Loy delivering an extremely passionate speech to the inmates. With the exciting main event of several, mostly wrongfully convicted inmates being set free, many of the secondary plots went unnoticed. This includes one featuring Mon Mothma running into a man whose status may raise an eyebrow to some.
Richard Dillane, known for his portrayal of Patrick Wayne in Pennyworth, made a guest appearance as Chandrilan banker Davo Sculdun. The character was mentioned in the previous episode when Mothma referred to him as a “thug,” but gave very little context for what exactly made him so bad. We are left to wonder if it was as simple as a personal dislike, or if there was a more substantive reason for her to call him that.

In the newest episode, we see him have a conversation with Mon Mothma, and things slowly start to unravel. We are quickly told that he is very wealthy, and views his wealth as “freedom from other people’s opinions.” He has a shady business where he helps make people’s transactions more discreet, which to some would likely raise an eyebrow. He then tells Mon, “What’s unfortunate is that people such as yourself, those with immaculate reputations, sometimes feel that by taking advantage of the opportunity, they’re somehow tarnished.” It is implied that he has helped people potentially get away with illegal activities such as money laundering and other shady activities in the name of the right to privacy.
What he says next will likely raise the largest red flags for a lot of people. Instead of being paid for his services, he requested that his 14-year-old son be introduced to Mon’s 13-year-old daughter, implying that he wants the two of them to be wed. He then increases the creepy factor as he refers to these two minors as “attractive,” and he seems shocked and appalled at Mon’s disgust and refusal.
His proposal shows how he does not take ideas and sentiments into consideration. Davon Sculdun is the kind of person who thinks that if he has enough money, he can get away with anything. This is bigger than any right vs. wrong views. He simply does not value people’s principles. Mon Mothma’s decision not to work with Sculdun is in contrast with Luthen Rael, who is willing to sacrifice anything and everything for the cause.
