How ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ Could Tie Into ‘Jedi: Survivor’

Cal Kestis and BD-1

Jedi: Survivor will be the most anticipated Star Wars game since Electronic Art’s Battlefront (2015). With the proven success of its predecessor, there should be little to no apprehension over the quality of the game. At this point, there is no reason we should expect anything less than the excellent gameplay and story that Jedi: Fallen Order delivered.

On May 27th, Electronic Arts (EA) revealed the first trailer for Jedi: Survivor, the sequel to the critically acclaimed Jedi: Fallen Order. Speculation for the game has exploded after mysterious shots of a hooded figure with a red lightsaber and of a silver-haired man floating in a bacta tank were shown. Although EA and Respawn Entertainment have been cagey about details for this game, they did give us one scoop. They have confirmed that this story takes place five years after the previous game and ten years after the events of Order 66. This is very interesting because that puts us right in line with the events that transpire in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series. This is not a coincidence. I believe we will see a significant crossover with certain aspects of the Kenobi series with the continuation of Cal Kestis’ story.

The truth is, there is more evidence to suggest this crossover than simply the shared spot in the timeline. The Obi-Wan series gave us a live-action look at the Fortress Inquisitorious, initially introduced in Jedi: Fallen Order as the Inquisitor’s base of operations. This isn’t the first time Fallen Order was referenced by a Star Wars series, either. Chapter 5 of The Book of Boba Fett gave us a look at a BD droid. Not the exact one Cal Kestis traveled with, but clearly, the same model that fans first saw in Fallen Order. So it is clear that Lucasfilm is not scared of alluding to different Star Wars stories regardless of their mediums. So, where does this leave us? How could these Jedi: Survivor and the Obi-Wan series intersect at all? I will start with what I believe is the most likely link: The Path.

To recap (spoilers for Obi-Wan Kenobi), The Path smuggled and secured safe passage for force-sensitive children away from the Empire’s eyes. Not only was the Emperor interested in eliminating all Force-sensitive beings outside of himself and Vader, but Palpatine was also interested in harvesting midichlorians for his cloning experiments. The Path served as an “Underground Railroad” of sorts and was created and led by one of the many rebel cells throughout the galaxy.

It is quite likely that Cal and company assisted the Path in smuggling Force-sensitive children. This could be the case because, at the end of Fallen Order, Cal Kestis proclaims, with a Jedi Holocron containing a list of every Force-sensitive child in the galaxy in hand, “Their destiny should be trusted to the Force.” He then destroyed the Holocron. Knowing Cere and Cal’s desire to rebuild the Jedi Order, they would leap at the opportunity to preserve any likelihood of that becoming a reality. Whether we actively participate in assisting the Path or if we hear of these endeavors after the fact in the five-year time jump between each game.

We know that EA and Respawn aren’t afraid or limited in bringing some legacy characters into the fold. Not only did we get an appearance from Saw Gerrera, but we had one of the best endings to a video game in recent memory, thanks to the arrival of Darth Vader in the conclusion of Jedi: Fallen Order. The prospect of Cal’s involvement with the Path brings the potential of coming across some familiar faces in a galaxy far away. In my opinion, one of the most likely is the Jedi Quinlan Vos. Obi-Wan mentions this fellow Jedi in episode 3 of his series. This confirmed that Quinlan Vos not only survived Order 66 but remained active in the fight against the Sith.

The biggest reason that I see an interaction between Cal and Quinlan imminent is the rare ability that they share. Cal Kestis possesses the force ability known as Psychometry or Force Echo, a rare Force power that allows him to sense the history of an object just by touching it. We see this throughout the game with random objects found in various areas, most notably when he touched the Second Sister’s lightsaber and then witnessed Trilla’s perspective of Order 66, her transition to an Inquisitor, and Cere’s experience with the dark side of the force. Quinlan Vos has this same exact ability. As a Jedi Master, Vos has a vast knowledge of the Force that Cal Kestis would find particularly valuable.

Another face that might pop up in Cal’s next chapter is Reva, the former Third Sister of the Inquisitors. We do not yet know why the numbered Brother/Sister designations are. However, if it is simply the order in which each Inquisitor was given the title, then it is very likely Reva, the former Third Sister, knew Trilla, the late Second Sister. With Reva’s second chance at life given to her by Obi-Wan, along with her guilt and trauma of not being able to save her family from Anakin’s slaughter in the Jedi Temple, we could see her assisting the Path. Even if it is simply a cameo, it would be satisfying to see the continued progress of Reva’s character as she seeks a better way to avenge her fallen family.

Reva

Unfortunately, I do not see a possibility of Obi-Wan Kenobi appearing in Jedi: Survivor in any capacity. The Obi-Wan series made it very clear that the only way he would leave Luke on Tatooine would be to help his sister Leia. Additionally, with the training he would undergo with Qui-Gon Jinn, I doubt Ben will have much free time to help Cal with anything. However, I think it is likely that Cal and his team will get involved with one, if not a few, rebel factions. Doing some inferring here, but I can’t help but draw parallels to Cal’s Squad and the crew of the Ghost, led by Kanan Jarrus. These are two groups led by a Jedi whose masters sacrificed themselves for their padawan’s survival. It is very plausible that these two rag-tag groups could team up, begrudgingly perhaps, with the common goal of making trouble for the Empire in mind.

Even though details for this game are scarce, I don’t need to learn more about it to be excited about it. Respawn Entertainment (no, not EA) did a masterful job crafting Jedi: Fallen Order. Unfortunately, at this point, there is no official release window for the sequel. However, I, along with many others, anxiously await Cal Kestis’ next adventure.
