Could Moff Gideon Be Working For Grand Admiral Thrawn?

One of the biggest questions that many Star Wars fans have asked themselves throughout The Mandalorian and its spin-off stories is, what is the state of the Empire? The once mighty regime ruled by Emperor Palpatine that dominated the galaxy has been thought to be destroyed but has it truly gone?

During the events of The Mandalorian, we see the Imperial Remnant scattered and disorganized, made up of various cells and bases. Our main antagonist is Moff Gideon, a leader of an Imperial Remnant who is after Grogu for reasons we still need to figure out. Many have wondered just how Moff Gideon has been able to obtain such resources after the defeat of the Empire at the Battle of Jakku. While we know that in the future of the post-Endor era, the First Order will rise from the ashes, we have no idea how active they are now. We also know that Grand Admiral Thrawn is somewhere out there as well commanding forces. So where does this leave the wily Moff and his projects involving the M-count of Grogu?

Into the Unknown

According to the Aftermath novels by Chuck Wendig, Palpatine’s contingency plan was to destroy the Empire and only allow the worthy and most radical to live and rebuild the Empire in the unknown regions. Thus during The Mandalorian timeline, the First Order would be preparing its forces and building up a solid military force to one day take down the New Republic. Moff Gideon is not among them.

We have seen Moff Gideon operating an armed, yet small faction of Imperial forces in the Outer Rim during the time of The Mandalorian. With a mix of Stormtroopers and Tie-Fighters, he has a sizable force and operation running, though nothing compared to what will become of the First Order.

Many fans have speculated though that Gideon is a cog in someone else’s machine. We know that there was another Imperial leader and one of great prominence also out there during that time.

A Chiss Ascedent

Grand Admiral Thrawn, appointed by Emperor Palpatine himself and a member of Imperial High Command, seems to also be out there during the time of The Mandalorian. Though what the Grand Admiral is up to is still unsure, he seems to be in command of certain forces within the outer areas of the galaxy.

Very little has been said about what happened to Thrawn after his defeat in Rebels and being taken by the Purgils, but he may have returned to the known galaxy. The Empire has fallen, and what is the military mind to do now?

Imperial Together

So we know that Thrawn and Gideon are two Imperial Warlords operating during this time in the Star Wars timeline. The question is though are they connected or not, as of now it really could go either way.

We know that Moff Gideon’s operation requires baby Grogu. In the final scene of The Mandalorian, Gideon was willing to sacrifice himself even though he sent the blood to whatever facility was being used. Whether it was a facility controlled by him or not is still up for debate, it also is possible that he is working for some form of High Command and that he is just an agent to a wider force.

Or perhaps the Empire much like Rebels early on are in such a state of underground that a network is being used. Could Thrawn be the one operating the various Imperial cells together keeping them semi-coordinated for whatever his grand plan is?

Either way, it is still uncertain what the state of the Empire is, could the Moff be working for the Grand Admiral? Or the Emperor, or some other third force it’s hard to say, the secrets of the Empire are left very much in the dark at the moment, perhaps season 3 of The Mandalorian will shed some light.
