Ewan McGregor has been wowing audiences for decades, but his most well-known character is certainly Obi-Wan Kenobi. It’s been 25 years since McGregor was introduced as Obi-Wan in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, though it was far from his first role. The Scottish actor made his debut in the television series Lipstick on Your Collar and rose to international recognition with his role in Trainspotting before joining the sci-fi series.

Kenobi was originally portrayed by Alec Guinness in Star Wars: A New Hope before McGregor reprised his legacy in the prequel trilogy. He reportedly watched a variety of Guinness’ roles to prepare for his jump into Star Wars. “I loved, more than anything, getting to know Alec Guinness’ work because I was playing him as a young man,” McGregor explained.

Just like his on-screen counterpart, McGregor mentored Hayden Christensen when they met during the production of Star Wars: Attack of the Clones. Taking the younger actor under his wing, McGregor taught Christensen how to stay grounded in the acting despite all of the technicalities of George Lucas’ series. They’ve continued to bond throughout the last 25 years, and now they’ve both returned to the Star Wars universe with no signs of slowing down yet.

Christensen and McGregor have both expressed strong interest in continuing their Star Wars roles in the future, with Obi-Wan Kenobi hopefully being renewed for another season at some point soon. Christensen has even commented on how much it means to him, expressing that “just as a fan, it’s so exciting to get to watch him play Obi-Wan - he’s just so good at it.” McGregor remarked that there are more stories left to tell between Obi-Wan Kenobi and Guinness’ time as the character that seem perfect for more projects. So far, though, it seems like Obi-Wan Kenobi was only a completed mini-series.

In 2012, McGregor was granted the Lifetime Achievement Award at the San Sebastián International Film Festival when he was just 41. The legendary actor was recently honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame this past September, presented by long-time friends Christensen and Mike Mills, who directed McGregor in the movie Beginners. Ewan McGregor’s stardom will carry on with various accomplishments to celebrate for years to come!
