Kanjiklub Fights The Pyke Syndicate In 'Star Wars: Bounty Hunters #27'
Issue 27 of Star Wars: Bounty Hunters by Ethan Sacks begins a brand new arc for the comic series. On the first page, we see T’onga awake from a nightmare in which she relives her near death experience at the hands of Boba Fett. Upon awakening, she finds her wife Losha exercising and working out her frustration over failing to stop Vukorah from escaping. While Bossk sleeps, T’onga silently considers Qi’ra’s offer to join Crimson Dawn. After Zuckuss catches her up on their latest job, Tasu expresses distaste toward their current clients. Once Bossk wakes up, T’onga briefs the rest of the crew on their assignment.
They’ve been hired to protect a high-ranking member of the Pyke Syndicate from their enemies while they celebrate a recent victory at the Accretion Disco space station orbiting the Crseih Black Hole. Once they arrive at the station, they are met by the Pykes. One of them refers to Tasu as “fighting pit trash”, to which T’onga states that he may be their boss’s best shot at living through the night. The crew is then escorted inside the Accretion Disco to begin protecting their client.

Meanwhile, Beilert Valance is on the Star Destroyer Righteous Fist trying to drink away his sorrows. Sadly, he laments to a service droid that his cybernetics prevent him from either tasting or getting drunk from alcohol. When the droid informs him that one of the Imperials seated nearby finds him attractive, he examines his new appearance in a window before being met by General Bordeaux.
The general explains that he assisted General Veers during the Battle of Hoth and shows admiration for Valance’s willingness to throw himself into harm’s way for the Empire. When Bordeaux says that one should take action before the opportunity passes, Valance leaves to speak with Lieutenant Jyala Haydenn. Valance explains that he thought about Haydenn’s offer and would like to get a chance to know her. To this, Haydenn tells Valance to stop talking before pulling him in for a kiss.
As the Pykes celebrate in the Accretion Disco, the Edgehawk crew keeps an eye on the crowd for any of the Syndicate’s enemies. Soon enough, they are attacked by a group the Pykes recently laid siege to; Kanjiklub. The assassins open fire on the Pykes as the crew engages them and leads their client to safety. During the fight, Losha lashes out at one of the assassins, and T’onga helps calms her down, promising her that they will face everything together from now on.
Soon, the assassins manage to corner the head Pyke but are stopped from killing him by Tasu. The leader of the assassins then informs Tasu of what the Pyke did. He ordered the bombing of one of the Kanjiklub fight schools, killing their youngling students while they slept. Reminding Tasu of his early life on their home world of Nar Kanji, the leader offers him a chance to leave the Edgehawk crew and rejoin with his true friends. Once Kanjiklub departs, the Pyke thanks Tasu for his protection. Shortly after, T’onga and the rest of the crew reunite with Tasu, only to find that he has killed the Pyke they were hired to protect.
Bounty Hunters 27 is a fun setup for an intriguing arc. The focus on Tasu Leech’s character and his potential joining of Kanjiklub is a unique angle for the story. The fight between Kanjiklub and the Edgehawk crew in the Accretion Disco is also quite exciting since this is the first time Star Wars has utilized a rave setting for an action sequence. Plus I’m surprised to see Valance developing a romance with Haydenn, given his complicated feelings towards the Empire and the fact that his wife, Yuralla Vega may still be alive. With T’onga’s crew caught in a war between Kanjiklub and the Pykes, things are sure to get heated over the next few issues. And if Tasu does ultimately decide to leave the crew, he might just end up telling that to Kanjiklub.
