Bossk Faces The Knights Of Ren In 'Star Wars: Bounty Hunters'
WARNING: SPOILERS FOR Star Wars: Bounty Hunters #24- 26
The latest arc of Star Wars: Bounty Hunters by Ethan Sacks followed the crew of the Edgehawk as they infiltrated Crimson Dawn and fought the Knights of Ren face-to-mask. The Edgehawk crew consisted of mercenaries T’onga, her wife Losha Tarkon, Bossk, Zuckuss, 4-LOM, Tasu Leech, and a pet Nexu nicknamed Furball. Their current mission involved rescuing a young girl named Cadeliah, the heir to the Unbroken Clan and Mourner’s Wail crime syndicates. Cadeliah was targeted by many gangs and crime lords who wish to take control of the syndicates she was set to inherit. Most recently, she was captured by Lady Qi’ra, the current leader of Crimson Dawn, who wished to use the Unbroken Clan and Mourner’s Wail in her plan to sow chaos throughout the Empire and assassinate the Emperor. The Edgehawk crew decided to rescue Cadeliah from Qi’ra in order to stabilize the criminal underworld. With the help of Dengar, the crew was able to get on the Vermillion, Crimson Dawn’s fortress-flagship, and fight off the ship’s security. That was until the Knights of Ren showed up.
Having just lost one of their members while on a mission for Qi’ra, the Knights of Ren were in no mood for a fight. Unable to back down from a challenge, the knights and their leader, Ren, attacked the Edgehawk crew amidst the chaos on the Vermillion. Though the rest of the crew was unfamiliar with the Knights, Bossk quickly recognized them and warned that they would be lucky to escape with their lives. This implies that the Knights of Ren were well known among mercenaries and may have possibly been around for decades. Despite Bossk’s warning, though, Tasu Leech charged for the Knights, and the rest of the crew followed suit. They were barely able to escape with their lives.

Back at the Edgehawk, Losha was overwhelmed by their prisoner, Vukorah, the current leader of the Unbroken Clan. As Vukorah escaped and the rest of the crew returned to the Edgehawk, T’onga finally located Cadeliah, only for Cadeliah to refuse to leave the Vermillion. Qi’ra then entered the room alongside the knights and condescendingly welcomed T’onga aboard. T’onga tried to persuade Cadeliah to leave with her, but Cadeliah claimed she would rather stay with Crimson Dawn than be back in the crosshairs of everyone else. Defeated, T’onga fell to her knees and realized that the entire mission had been for nothing. To this, Qi’ra offered T’onga and her crew a chance to work for Crimson Dawn and actually make a difference in the galaxy. Leaving Cadeliah, T’onga returned to her crew on the Edgehawk before they took off from the Vermillion.
Woven throughout this story arc, we also get short moments with cyborg bounty hunter Beilert Valance, who struggled with his decision to continue working with the Empire.
Overall, the “Raid on the Vermillion” arc was quite the thrilling ride. Issues 24, 25, and 26 of Star Wars: Bounty Hunters manage to keep the reader’s attention with wall-to-wall action while pushing each of the characters forward in new and interesting directions. From T’onga’s desperation to Valance’s ever-shifting loyalties, the cast of Bounty Hunters struggled to find their place while the entire underworld crumbled around them. There are also a few amusing moments as well, including Zuckuss’s feigned confidence in himself and Tasu Leech’s desire to one-up Ren in terms of skill and muscle. Bounty Hunters is still a fun ride for Star Wars fans, and I cannot wait to see how Ethan Sacks continues to juggle such a wretched cast of scum and villainy.
