Everything We Know About 'Ahsoka' So Far
Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim has featured many exciting announcements of the new Star Wars series, the introduction of new characters, and live-action characters to their animated counterparts in the animated Star Wars series. We are finally getting release dates for some of the new series, as well as teaser trailers and full trailers. Of course, one of the highlights was the premier of the first two episodes of Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Along with that, there have been some interesting and very exciting announcements of highly anticipated series. One of those series that finally got some more information instead of just hints is Disney’s Ahsoka starring Rosario Dawson as Ahsoka Tano.
RELATED:
When the live-action Ahsoka series was announced by Disney/Lucasfilm in 2020 for Disney+, fans started speculating as to when in her timeline, and the timeline of the Star Wars universe, the show would focus on. Speculations started flying about as to who would be included in it: who the bad guys might be, might we see characters from Clone Wars or Rebels or both, etc. For a long time, we didn’t find out much about the series. Ahsoka Tano first showed up in the live-action Season 2 of The Mandalorian and fans found out that at that point in her timeline, she is searching for Grand Admiral Thrawn whom we were first introduced to in the animated series Star Wars: Rebels. Fans of Rebels were ecstatic wondering if the show would feature other Rebels characters and when it might take place in the timeline. Rebels ended on a bit of a cliffhanger, and because of that, fans have wanted closure to the storyline.
Now, information just announced at the Star Wars Celebration, including a teaser trailer, seems to indicate that we may be definitely in for a series that continues that storyline in Rebels. Along with this information, it was also confirmed that Sabine Wren (a pivotal character in Rebels, as well as, with her history as a Mandalorian) will be in the live-action Ahsoka series and will be played by Natasha Liu Bordizzo. The Star Wars Panel did confirm that the series will take place in the same timeframe as The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and the recently announced Star Wars: Skeleton Crew. This particular panel did not address whether Hayden Christensen would appear as Darth Vader and it also did not confirm whether Mary Elizabeth Winstead would be in the series as Ewan McGregor had previously hinted at.
The official Star Wars Twitter page tweeted out about Natasha Liu Bordizzo’s casting with this tweet:
The teaser trailer was shown to fans at the panel as well, and seemingly confirmed some things about what might be in the series, as well as, introducing/confirming Sabine Wren and Hera Syndulla. Although, what this might mean, remains unclear at this time. There also appears to be a Huyang droid. The Ghost also appears to be in the series. The trailer also shows Ahsoka taking off her hood, and touching some mysterious markings on the ground. There were several key things that the teaser seemed to focus on: a hand potentially using the Force to reach a cup and the painting of the Rebels crew that Sabine is looking at in the final shots of the last episode of Star Wars: Rebels. Sabine does not say anything in the trailer, but this shot does appear to be the same one (albeit, live-action) as the last shot of the Rebels series when Sabine says: “Ezra's out there somewhere, and it's time to bring him home.” The final episode of Rebels focuses on Jedi Ezra Bridger going after Grand Admiral Thrawn. They both disappear, and Sabine and Ahsoka decide to team up to find them. And the continuation of that storyline has not happened until, hopefully, now.
Lucasfilm/Disney also has yet to confirm who is playing Hera Syndulla, Ezra Bridger, or Grand Admiral Thrawn. There were reports that Lars Mikkelsen, the voice actor for Thrawn in Rebels, was set to play him in the live-action, but that has yet to be confirmed or denied. Lucasfilm/Disney also has yet to confirm if any of the other characters from Rebels will be a part of the series and the quest for Thrawn/Bridger or not.
The Star Wars panel did confirm that Ahsoka will be released in 2023, but the official date has yet to be announced. Ahsoka is currently filming, but Rosario Dawson did manage to make an appearance at Star Wars Celebration. The Mandalorian Season 3 was confirmed by the Star Wars panel at Celebration to be coming out in February of 2023, so fans can probably expect Ahsoka to come out after that. Star Wars Celebration is not over yet, and with filming underway, hopefully, more information will come to light about this highly anticipated series and what we might expect from it.
