Brace yourselves because it looks like this Game of Thrones spinoff isn’t coming. Actor Kit Harrington has announced that a spin-off starring his character, Jon Snow, is no longer in development. This project was announced in June 2022, and George R. R. Martin himself commented on the announcement, saying that the project had a good production team. In an interview with ScreenRant, Harrington stated that the team “couldn’t find the right story to tell that we were all excited about enough”. As such, development on the project is off the table, though he hasn’t ruled out coming back to the idea in the future.

Jon Snow’s story in the series ended with him leaving Westeros behind to start a new life in the haunted forest with the Wildlings, which is likely where the spin-off would start, if and when it gets made. After the divisive reception to Season 8Game of Thrones entered a bit of a rut, though enthusiasm remains for the television adaptation of Martin’s A Song of Fire and Ice novels. As projects like this prove, there are still plenty of stories to be told in Westeros and beyond. For now, we’ll just have to settle with House of the Dragon and wait for other news.
