The storyline of the 2020 comic mini series Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin is coming to the silver screen. Paramount Pictures is currently developing a live-action film adaptation of the comic’s storyline! According to The Hollywood Reporter, Child’s Play (2019) and video game Alan Wake II (2023) writer Tyler Burton Smith will be crafting the adaptation. Horror movie and DC Studios icon Walter Hamada will produce the project. This adaptation will not be backing down from the darker aspects of the storyline; at this time, the film is rated R. With this rating, the content is directed to a more adult audience, taking a different route than the more recent films and shows.

The comics were published by IDW Publishing in its own TMNT universe continuity. It is set in a dark version of the future, the location being New York. Shredder’s grandson, joined by an army of synthetic ninjas, has picked off Splinter and his sons one by one until only a single son remains. The surviving turtle fights to avenge his family and kill the one he holds responsible. A sequel comic run is actively being written, following the new generation of New York’s protectors as they fight for their home’s safety.

This isn’t the first announced adaptation of the gritty comic storyline. A video game comparable to God of War is currently in the works as well. It was announced last March, and a teaser trailer was shown in August during the THQ Nordic Digital Showcase. Details are being kept pretty firmly under wraps, and there is no estimated release window at the moment.
