Back in 2021, Simu Liu helped kick off the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase 4 with Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. However, since that time, the character has been conspicuously absent from the MCU. Despite a post-credits scene connecting the character to Captain Marvel and Bruce Banner, and the sorcerer training grounds of Kamar-Taj, Shang was missing from the Doctor Strange and Captain Marvel sequels as well as the She-Hulk series. This led one fan on Threads to give up hope on seeing the character, writing, “I feel like Marvel has abandoned the Shang-Chi fanbase. There has been no effort by the studio to get the sequel filming or even include the character in other Marvel films. Frustrating as hell.”

Liu took time to respond to the fan and assured them that their despair was misplaced. Liu told the fan, “I promise it’s happening.” Much of the delayed filming schedule comes from the Jonathan Majors incident. Majors played Kang, who was set up to be the next big bad of the series, or the Thanos for the current arc. However, after Majors’ was found guilty of assault and harassment, the studio cut ties, leaving them with a dilemma of how to proceed. Liu’s response is the first confirmation we have of a Shang-Chi sequel and, as such, no other details are available at present.
